St. John’s Finishes Tied for Second at BIG EAST Match Play

Red Storm sophomore Peicheng Chen shines with three individual wins in West Palm Beach
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.– The St. John's men's golf team finished tied for second after wrapping up at the BIG EAST Match Play event on Tuesday
The Red Storm fell to UConn, 4.5-2.5, in its final match of the competition held at the Bear Lakes Country Club.
The Huskies went onto win the league event, tallying a 14-5-2 overall record (15 points) over their three matches. St. John's and Butler finished deadlocked for second place but concluding the competition with a total of 9.5 points.
Peicheng Chen and Brendan Smith earned victories for the Johnnies, while Jack Simon tallied the final half-point, after a tie against Jimmy Paradise of UConn.
Smith concluded with 18 holes 1-up on the Huskies' Trevor Lopez to record his second win of the two-day tournament. Chen was on fire down the stretch, posting two birdies and an eagle to storm past Jared Nelson of UConn. The Beijing native clinched with his eagle on the 17th to go 2-up and secure a Red Storm point.
Overall, Chen registered a stellar performance in the team's opening event in Florida. The sophomore logged a tournament-best 4.42 stroke average on the par-5's over the three matches.
The Johnnies will return to the course later this month, when they participate in 2023 Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz., hosted by Loyola Maryland on Feb. 26-28.
