Red Storm continues five-match winning streak
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 7-0 sweep against St. Francis Brooklyn at USTA on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Storm (5-3) has earned a sweep in four of its last five matches.
Once again, the Red Storm set the tone early for the match by winning the doubles point, notching victories in all three matches. In their second-straight match together, the pairings of Mouna Bouzgarrou and Lalita Devarakonda, and Yesica de Lucas and Emilie Haakansson picked up wins in dominating fashion. At no. 1 doubles, Bouzgarrou and Devarakonda defeated Milana Lysova and Margherita Fiorio, 6-2. In no. 2 doubles de Lucas and Haakansson earned a 6-1 victory against Nicolle Romero and Lincy Valencia.
In singles play, five Johnnies earned their second win of the day. Improving her singles record to a team-best, 7-1, de Lucas won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 against Fiorio. Breunich picked up her sixth singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Mia Skrbinsek. In no. 1 singles, Devarakonda clinched in a tiebreaker, 9-7 to win 7-6, 6-4 against Lysova. Camila Ordonez earned her third win of the season stopping her opponent, Valentine Mudry, from winning a single game, 6-0, 6-0.
The Johnnies will enjoy an eight-day hiatus before travelling to Delaware next Friday. Double play is scheduled for 12 p.m. against the Blue Hens at Delcastle Tennis Center.
