St. John’s Places Ninth at the Ross Intercollegiate

Chen and Rittberger tally top-40 finishes individually
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — The St. John's men's golf team placed ninth out of 18 teams at the Ross Intercollegiate over the last two days.
The Red Storm finished with a cumulative team score of 26-over par over the three rounds and 54 holes at the Mid Pines Golf Club in North Carolina. South Florida took home first place with a combined score of 15-under par over the two days in Southern Pines.
Red Storm sophomore standout Peicheng Chen totaled the lowest score finishing 6-over par and sliding into 32nd place. He moved up 11 spots on the final day after tallying a 1-over, 73. Chen sunk four birdie putts.
Ryan Rittberger turned in a solid performance at the Ross Intercollegiate, coming in tied for 36th in the 92-golfer field. The senior carded a 1-over, 73, in the first and third rounds and ended the tournament at 7-over par, good for second on the team. The Long Island native concluded the tournament with a team-high 10 birdies.
Tyler Gerbavsits had the lowest round by a St. John's player over the three rounds, recording a 2-under, 70, in his second round on Monday afternoon. The graduate student finished up at 9-over in 47th place.
Jack Simon (11-over) and Brendan Smith (18-over) rounded out the Red Storm line-up in the 18-team competition. They were the only two players on the squad to record an eagle.
The Johnnies will return to the course in April, when they compete in the Southern Invitational in Palm Beach, Fla on April 3-4.
