Women’s Tennis Returns to BIG EAST Play Hosting Providence

The Red Storm will play three consecutive conference matches
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 16, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team will host Providence for its second BIG EAST match of the season on Friday afternoon at 12:15 at the USTA Tennis Center.
The Red Storm split a pair of matches last week, sweeping Radford, 4-0 before falling to No. 57 Yale. Three Johnnies earned a pair of wins against Radford. After earning the doubles point against the Bulldogs, Yesica de Lucas was the only Johnnie to win in singles, notching her second win of the week and improving her season record to 11-2.
The Johnnies opened BIG EAST play with a victory for the third consecutive season on Feb. 24 at the USTA Tennis Center. After three nonconference matches the Red Storm return to league play against Providence.
In doubles play, Willa Bay Breunich and Camila Ordonez which have maintained their partnership have the most wins as a couple, logging a 5-4 overall record. Mouna Bouzgarrou and de Lucas both have notched eight wins in total with multiple partners. Bouzgarrou is 8-3 with two partners while Lucas is a combined 8-2 with three different partners.
In singles play, de Lucas leads the way with an 11-2 overall record. Breunich's 8-3 overall record is the second-best on the team. Three Johnnies have posted six wins on the season. Lopez touts a 6-4 record, while Bouzgarrou and Lalita Devarakonda are 6-5 on the season.
Head Coach Lauren Leo earned her 100th career-win at the helm of the St. John's Red Storm against Villanova on Feb. 24. Leo is the second head coach in program history to reach the milestone. Sheila Wildermuth owns the program record with 149 total wins in her 10-season career with the Red Storm from 1974-1984.
Providence enters the match, 0-8 on the season. The Friars have dropped their first two BIG EAST matches against Villanova and UConn. Despite the winless record, Providence has only been swept twice this season. The Friars were idle last week after a cancelation against Merrimack,
The Red Storm are a perfect 15-0 against the Friars in the all-time meetings between the two programs. The Johnnies are 5-0 in matches at the USTA Tennis Center, including a 7-0 sweep last year.
