Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Providence, 6-1 for Second BIG EAST Win

The Red Storm will play a pair of conference matches next week.
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 17, 2023) - The St. John's women's tennis team toppled Providence, 6-1, for its second BIG EAST win of the season on Friday afternoon at 12:15 at the USTA Tennis Center.
The Red Storm notched its conference-leading second win of the season to improve to 8-6 overall, and 2-0 in league play.
St. John's won the first point of the match clinching the doubles point after winning the first two pairings against the Friars. Jayden Nielsen returned to the lineup for the Johnnies teaming up with Yesica de Lucas to notch the tandem's fifth win of the season winning 6-2 against Darah Ross and Mae Abreu. The duo of Lalita Devarakonda and Amaya Lopez clinched the point for the Red Storm with a 6-2 victory over Lauren Carson and Julia Migliorini.
In singles play, three Johnnies earned their second win of the day. At No. 1 singles, Devarakonda notched her seventh victory of the season, 6-2, 6-1 over Katie Mulvey. De Lucas improved to a team-best 12-2, knocking off Ross, 6-3, 6-2. The third Johnnies to record two wins on the day was Amaya Lopez winning 6-0, 6-1 against Vannelie Melendez. Camila Ordonez didn't allow Elisa Davalos to win a single game using a pair of sweeps to win 6-0, 6-0. Mouna Bouzgarrou registered her seventh win of the season as well, 6-1, 6-2 against Migliorini.
St. John's will continue its three consecutive conference matchups next week with a pair of league opponents. The Red Storm will host UConn on Friday before traveling to Georgetown on Sunday to close the weekend.
