BRONX, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team toppled Fordham, 9-0 in five innings, on Saturday afternoon at Bahoshy Field.
With the win, the Red Storm improved to 9-13 overall, and 2-1 in the BIG EAST. The Rams dropped to 6-13 on the season, and will open Atlantic 10 play next week.
Freshman Loreley Francia dazzled in her second start notching her first win of her collegiate career. The Spring, Tex. native struck out 10 Rams, the most by any Red Storm hurler this season. Francia allowed just three hits and only walked one in her first complete game.
Sydney Totarsky, Amy Mallah and London Jarrard headlined the St. John's offensive attack combining for eight hits and all nine RBIs. Jarrard was 3-for-3, belted her third round-tripper of the season, and stole two bags for a team-leading 14 on the season. Mallah belted her second homer of the season while hitting 2-for-2 with a walk.
The Red Storm struck first with a four-run first inning. After the first two batters reached base to begin the game, Peyton Cody moved them both into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. After Katie Whittaker reached base on her seventh hit by pitch of the season, Mallah drew a walk to push the first run across for the Johnnies. With the bases loaded and two outs, Totarsky laced a double to the gap to plate all three runners and extend the lead to 4-0.
In the third frame, St. John's opened up its lead. After Cassidy Stouffer singled through the left side, Mallah blasted a home run to left to score Stouffer. A pair of Red Storm singles forced Fordham Head Coach Melissa Inouye to go to the bullpen bringing in Holly Beeman. It was then Jarrard's turn, as she drove a double down the line to score both Johnnies and open up the lead to 8-0.
Francia kept dealing including a 1-2-3 fourth inning to bring the Red Storm back up to the plate. With two outs in the fifth frame, Jarrard notched her third RBI of the game with a solo shot to right. Francia struck out three in the bottom half to clinch the 9-0 victory in five innings due to the run-rule.
St. John's will travel to Stony Brook for a midweek afternoon game at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at University Field. The Red Storm will resume BIG EAST play with a weekend series against DePaul starting on Friday.
