Women’s Tennis Sweeps Hofstra on Senior Day, 7-0

Saturday’s match at Stony Brook has been canceled due to expected inclement weather
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team swept Hofstra, 7-0, on Senior Day at the USTA Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Before the match, a Senior Day presentation honored five seniors and graduate students for their hard work and dedication for the program and St. John's University: Lalita Devarakonda, Jayden Nielsen, Emilie Haakansson, Amaya Lopez and Yesica de Lucas.
The Red Storm (11-6) were scheduled to travel to Stony Brook on Saturday, but the match has been canceled due to expected inclement weather.
The Johnnies won the doubles point in the match, surrendering just four games in three matches. Top duo Nielsen and de Lucas notched a 6-1 victory over Deniz Soyer and April Sanchez to improve to 7-3 on the season. Mouna Bouzgarrou and Haakansson also secured their seventh victory of the season with a 6-1 defeat of Abigail Higgins and Sabira Mohamed. In the final pairing of the match, Devarakonda and Lopez teamed up for a 6-2 win against the tandem of Jimena Garbino and Ananyaa Bhargava.
Five Johnnies notched their second victory of the match in singles play. All six of the singles matches were straight-set victories in favor of St. John's. De Lucas won her team-high 15th match of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Soyer at the No. 2 slot. Devarakonda and Bouzgarrou entered the 10-win club with defeats of Garbino, 6-1, 6-2 and Sanchez, 6-2, 6-1, respectively. Camila Ordonez allowed Bhargava to win just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 defeat. Lopez and Nielsen rounded out the match each earning their second victory of the day.
St. John's will resume BIG EAST play next week traveling to the Midwest for a pair of matches. The Red Storm will take on Marquette on Thursday at 2 p.m. and will then face-off against DePaul on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
