Women’s Tennis Travels to Midwest to Face Pair of Conference Foes

The Red Storm are a perfect 4-0 in conference play
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team will open its Midwest trip with a Thursday afternoon match against Marquette starting at 2 p.m. at the Elite Sports Club – River Glen before heading to DePaul for a 1:30 p.m. start on Saturday at XS Village.
Last week the Red Storm's only match was a 7-0 sweep against Hofstra. The Johnnies were scheduled to travel to Stony Brook on Saturday, but the match was been canceled due to expected inclement weather. On Friday against Hofstra, St. John's was dominant clinching the doubles point with a pair 6-1 wins and a 6-2 victory. The Johnnies took all six singles matches in straight sets, not allowing the Pride to win more than two games per set in any matchup.
Yesica de Lucas has been very impressive this season, compiling a 26-5 overall record. The graduate student is 15-2 in singles matches, boasting a 12-1 record in the No. 2 slot. The Alcala de Henares, Spain native is 11-3 in doubles matches with three different teammates. She teamed up with Jayden Nielsen to win BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week on January 30th.
Two pairs of Johnnies have totaled seven wins each as a duo. Mouna Bouzgarrou and Emilie Haakansson have won seven out of eight matches, while de Lucas and Nielsen are 7-3. Camila Ordonez and Willa Bay Breunich are 5-4 as a duo. Bouzgarrou is also 11-3 in doubles matches paired with Haakansson and Lalita Devarakonda.
Three Johnnies have totaled double-digit wins in singles play. de Lucas leads the way with an 15-2 overall record. Devarakonda and Bouzgarrou each have notched ten wins for the second best on the team. Breunich touts an 8-3 overall record with six of those wins in the fifth spot.
Head Coach Lauren Leo earned her 100th career-win at the helm of the St. John's Red Storm against Villanova on Feb. 24. Leo is the second head coach in program history to reach the milestone. Leo has now totaled 105 career wins with the Johnnies. Sheila Wildermuth owns the program record with 149 total wins in her 10-season career with the Red Storm from 1974-1984.
Marquette enters the weekend 6-10 and 0-3 in the BIG EAST. After the Golden Eagles play the Johnnies on Thursday, the squad hosts Seton Hall on Saturday for its fifth conference match. Last weekend Marquette split a pair of matches with a 4-3 defeat of Omaha and fell at Creighton, 5-2.
The all-time series between the two programs is tied 4-4. The Red Storm notched a 6-1 victory last spring in Queens against the Golden Eagles. The Johnnies have not won in Milwaukee since 2017, as Marquette took a 4-0 win in 2019 in the Midwest.
DePaul will host Seton Hall on Friday before St. John's on Saturday. The Blue Demons enter the weekend matches, 9-8 and 4-1 in league play. The squad's lone conference loss was to Xavier last weekend, 5-2. DePaul has dropped its last three matches coming into the back-to-back matches starting on Friday. Hannah Smith and Greta Carbone lead the Blue Demons in doubles play with an 8-3 record. In singles play, three different players have totaled seven wins each.
The Blue Demons are 8-4 all-time against the Johnnies. St. John's is 2-1 on the road against DePaul and haven't lost in Chicago since 2009. The Blue Demons got the better of the Red Storm last spring at the BIG EAST Championships, 4-2.
