St. John's (17-14) enters its opening round matchup with the Bulldogs looking to advance in the BIG EAST Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years. The Red Storm has recorded 13 of its 17 wins in New York City this season, including a pair on its home court at Madison Square Garden. St. John's last win at MSG was on Feb. 11, as the Red Storm rallied for a 73-68 victory over then-No. 20/17 Providence behind a 16-point effort from junior guard David Jones.
Wednesday's contest will mark St. John's 750th all-time appearance at "The World's Most Famous Arena." The Johnnies have called Madison Square Garden home since 1931 and have played at least one game at "The Mecca" every season since 1934-35. St. John's owns a 438-311 (.585) all-time record at The Garden.
The Red Storm finished out the regular season with a hard-fought 96-94 setback at No 6/6 Marquette on Saturday. St. John's nearly erased a 10-point deficit in the final 29 seconds and had a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line with 2.4 seconds on the clock. Dylan Addae-Wusu logged his second 20-point performance in five games, posting a career-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting with four made 3-pointers. With a win over Butler, the Johnnies would get another shot at the top-seeded Golden Eagles in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 12 p.m.
St. John's split the regular season series with Butler, as each team held serve on its home court. The Johnnies handled the Bulldogs, 77-61, at Carnesecca Arena on Jan. 10 behind a 20-point, 10-rebound performance from Joel Soriano. Then on Feb. 7, Butler edged the Red Storm, 68-66, at Hinkle Fieldhouse, as Soriano's potential game-tying put back at the buzzer to force overtime was a split second too late.
Soriano finished the regular season tied for the top spot in Division I with 23 double-doubles. The senior center from Yonkers, N.Y., was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and garnered the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player award after increasing his scoring and rebounding averages by more than double from his first season in Queens. Soriano averaged a team-high 15.2 points and ranks third in the nation with 11.8 rebounds per contest.
Soriano enters the BIG EAST Tournament 47 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career. Junior guard Posh Alexander is also approaching the same milestone, looking to become the 53rd player to reach 1,000 career points with the Red Storm. The Brooklyn native is sitting 41 points shy of the mark.
Newcomer AJ Storr has also shined for the Red Storm, earning a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. The Rockford, Ill., native started the final 15 BIG EAST games for the Johnnies and averaged 12.0 points during this stretch. In the regular season, Storr reached double figures 13 times, including 11 double-digit efforts in conference play.
Butler (14-17) has dropped four of its last five games with its lone win coming against DePaul, 59-58, on Feb. 22. The Bulldogs are coming off a 78-66 loss at then-No. 19/17 Xavier on Saturday. Jayden Taylor posted 16 points versus the Musketeers and leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game. Simas Lukosius starred for Butler in the two matchups with the Johnnies this season, averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
