Kevin Michaels belts first home run of the season
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 2, 2023) – Despite Kevin Michaels going deep, the St. John's baseball team dropped its Sunday contest, 3-2, to William & Mary at Plumeri Park.
The Johnnies' second baseman unloaded his first home run of the season with a 408-foot shot, logging one of three Red Storm hits on the afternoon. Tate Ballestero and Austin Machado each tallied a base knock of their own.
Both teams combined for seven hits while Tribe outfielder Tank Yaghoubi logged three of them. Corey Adams provided half of William & Mary's four runs with a pair of RBIs.
St. John's (16-10) and William & Mary (18-11) were held off the board through the first two innings. Red Storm starter Tyler Roche held the home team without a hit until the Tribe broke through in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to left from Joe Delossantos for a 1-0 lead.
Following a blank fourth frame, Michaels launched a solo shot to left-center in the fifth, sending the pitch on a 103 mph drive to left-center and tying the game at one.
Reliever Sonny Fauci tossed back-to-back scoreless frames, stranding two runners on base in the fifth to keep the score deadlocked.
In the top of the sixth, St. John's took its first lead of the game with a one-run frame. After Ballestero reached on an error and a walk to Paul Orbon, both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch in the dirt. Machado went on to rope a 3-2 pitch to right-center, bringing Ballestero in from third for a 2-1 edge.
After tying the game at two in the home half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, William & Mary reclaimed the lead in the eighth on an RBI groundout to short for a one-run advantage.
The Johnnies battled in the final frame as the elder Orbon took one off the body and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Aaron Mann hammered a 2-2 pitch up the middle, but Tribe pitcher Carter Lovasz snagged the comebacker for the second out of the inning and halted the Red Storm's momentum before taking the 3-2 victory.
St. John's will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium on Thursday, opening BIG EAST play against nationally ranked UConn with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
