QUEENS, N.Y. (April 5, 2023) – The St. John's softball team edged Iona, 5-2, in a midweek tilt at Red Storm Field on a misty Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Red Storm improved to 14-17, and the Gaels fell to 10-18-1.
Anese Thompson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs on a tie-breaking home run in the third inning to give the Johnnies a 4-2 lead.
Jess Bianco had a busy day at the plate, working a pair of full count walks and seeing 31 pitches across her three at-bats.
Hannah Mearns provided a dominant effort, logging three strikeouts in her three innings of work out of the pen to earn her fifth win of the season
The Red Storm got on the board first with a two-run first inning. Bianco was unable to reach after a 12-pitch at bat to set the tone of the inning. The next batter, London Jarrard laced a single to left. Jarrard stole second and then stole third after a two-out walk by Amy Mallah. Mallah drew an errant throw on her stolen base attempt to plate Jarrard on a throwing error by the Iona catcher. The next batter, Sabrina Seaton swapped places with Mallah with an RBI double to the right-center gap to give the Red Storm a 2-0 lead after the first frame.
After a scoreless second inning, both teams added runs in the third. Iona started the top half on a leadoff walk and tied the game on a round-tripper by Jamie Sheeran, her team-leading 11th this year.
In the bottom half, Bianco led off with a walk. With one out, Thompson drove the first pitch of her at-bat over the wall in center to break the 2-2 tie for her first home run of the season.
The Red Storm threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two outs. Sydney Totarsky led off with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. After the Red Storm drew a pair of walks, Jarrard stepped up to plate. The second pitch of her at-bat reached the backstop and Totarsky was caught at the plate to end the inning.
The Johnnies added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a Totarsky double, Cassidy Stouffer laid down a bunt which was bobbled by the third baseman. Her throw plunked Stouffer en route to first, allowing Totarsky to score on the play. The first baseman then scooped up the loose ball and fired to second to nab Totarsky for the first out of the inning.
In the seventh inning, Loreley Francia notched her first collegiate save closing out the final frame for the 5-2 victory.
St. John's will embark on a three-game road series against UConn for an Easter Weekend series starting on Friday in Storrs, Conn.
