St. John’s Embarks on Three-Game Road Trip at UConn

The Red Storm will open the series on Friday night at 6 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 6, 2023) – The St. John's softball team will travel to UConn for a three-game series opening on Friday at Burrill Family Field.
The Red Storm carries a 14-17 overall record and is 4-5 in conference play.
Earlier this week, the Johnnies edged past Iona 5-2 at Red Storm Field. Tied at two in the third, Anese Thompson blasted a two-run shot to break the tie and give the Red Storm the last lead of the ballgame. Hannah Mearns secured her fifth win of the season with a three-inning appearance out of the bullpen and Loreley Francia earned her first collegiate save.
Sophomore London Jarrard is establishing herself as a top player not only in the BIG EAST but nationally, as well. The Carlsbad, Calif. native ranks in the top 50 in six categories nationally, and in the top 3 of the conference in nine statistical categories.
Thompson has been on fire lately reaching base in nine straight games dating back to March 22 against Stony Brook. During the streak she is hitting .579 with a .679 on-base percentage. She has knocked 11 hits, and drawn seven walks, while driving in six Johnnies.
Francia has proven herself in the Red Storm pen, retiring 16 of the 17 Pirates she faced on Sunday and notching her first collegiate save on Wednesday.
Bob Guerriero is in his fifth year as head coach of the St. John's Softball team and is assisted by Grace Kramer and Marissa Rizzi. Kramer, a 2017 St. John's graduate, is in her fourth season as an assistant coach while Rizzi, a 2020 graduate, is in her second season as a coach as a part of the Red Storm program.
UConn has won its last five games including a pair of nonconference contests earlier this week. The Huskies toppled Fairfield on Tuesday, 13-1, before a 5-0 shutout against UMass at home.
Eight Huskies have driven in at least 10, seven are hitting at least at a .300 clip and three have 10-plus stolen bases. A trio of Huskies received BIG EAST honors last week. Jana Sanden was named the player of the week following her 6-for-14, 2 home run and 5 RBI performance in the road series sweep of UConn. Lexi Hastings and Payton Kinney were named to the honor roll.
The head coach of the Huskies in her fourth season is Lauren Valentino. She has led her Huskies to the Championship game in each of the last two seasons.
The Huskies lead the all-time series with the Red Storm 63-18. Last spring UConn swept St. John's 3-0 in Queens.
Next week, St. John's will host Fordham on Wednesday before hosting Villanova in a three-game series starting on Friday.
