The Red Storm will face-off against Creighton beginning on Friday in Omaha
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team erupted on an eight-run third inning to take the home season finale against Stony Brook, 10-0 in five innings, on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
With the win, this marks the first season since 2019 that the Red Storm (20-26, 6-12 BIG EAST) have eclipsed the 20-wins mark on the season.
Amy Mallah knocked two singles in her two at-bats, the only Red Storm hitter to notch a multi-hit game. Four Johnnies drove in two runs apiece.
Loreley Francia and Carolina Zamudio each recorded three strikeouts in their two innings of work in the circle.
Stony Brook threatened in each of the first two innings, loading the bases against Francia in each frame. Francia was able to keep the Seawolves scoreless, ending each inning on a come-backer to herself.
The Red Storm broke open the game in the third inning, plating eight runs on five hits. Anese Thompson and Mallah led off the inning with a walk and a single. Elanna Lysiak laid down a sac bunt but got to first safely on an error which scored Thompson for the first run of the game. After a Lysiak stolen base and a London Jarrard walk, Sydney Totarsky brought in the next run on a fielding error by the Seawolves with the bases remaining loaded. Katie Whittaker connected for a hard-hit double to drive in a pair of runs and extend the lead to 4-0.
After Whittaker doubled, the Seawolves opted to go to their bullpen. Peyton Cody was the first batter up for the Johnnies and laced a single past a pair of diving infielders to give the Red Storm a 6-0 advantage with only one out. Cassidy Stouffer was the next batter and drove a 3-1 inside pitch over the left field fence, her second home run in as many games, to give the Red Storm an 8-0 lead after three frames.
In the fourth inning, the Red Storm tacked on a pair insurance runs to extend its lead to 10-0. After a bunt single by Jess Bianco to lead off the inning, Bianco stole her 36th bag on the second pitch to Jarrard. Jarrard then proceeded to double to left center for her 16th two-bagger of the season and later scored on a pinch-hit RBI single by Sabrina Seaton for the 10th run of the game.
Hannah Mearns entered the circle in the fifth to seal the 10-0 victory for the Red Storm.
St. John's will travel to Creighton for its final three games of the season. The Red Storm can potentially clinch a spot in the six-team BIG EAST Tournament Field with one win, and will secure their berth win two wins or a series sweep of the Bluejays.
