The Carriacou, Grenada native posts a 50.08-meter throw in the discus, good for 22nd
AUSTIN, Texas – St. John's track & field freshman Jamora Alves wrapped up the 2022-23 season at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finishing 22nd in the discus competition on Saturday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
"This was an great wrap-up to an incredible year." Head Coach Aliann Pompey said. "Second in the BIG EAST, an NCAA Championship competitor in Jamora [Alves], who is just a freshman, I am incredibly proud of what we were able to accomplish this year."
The Carriacou, Grenada native hurled the discus 46.76 meters in her first chance of the evening. Despite missing on her second try, Alves returned to form with her best throw at 50.08 meter, ranking 10th among the first flight.
The BIG EAST's lone discus competitor in the women's competition, Alves became the eighth individual Johnnie since 2003 to compete in the NCAA Championships and joined hammer specialist Blessing Egwu (2006) as the only two throwers to do so in the same span.
Alves concluded her stellar freshman campaign with an NCAA Championship appearance, adding to the impressive season highlighted by three individual BIG EAST titles, a new Grenada national record and several additional individual accolades in 2022-23. The BIG EAST Outdoor Women's High Point Performer earned five victories across the indoor and outdoor seasons while capturing 12 combined podium finishes in the discus, javelin and shot put competitions.
