Bob Guerriero has resigned after five seasons leading the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg announced on Monday that the University has accepted the resignation of Bob Guerriero after five seasons as head coach of the Red Storm softball program.
A national search for the 11th head coach in program history will begin immediately. Red Storm assistant coach Grace Kramer will serve as interim head coach during the transition.
"We thank Coach Guerriero for over a decade of service to St. John's Athletics," said Cragg. "The St. John's softball team and its student-athletes have celebrated numerous accomplishments on and off the field thanks in part to his commitment to the program."
In five seasons at the helm of the softball program, Guerriero led St. John's to a 79-122 record, including a 23-29 mark this past season. The team's 23 victories were the most wins in a season since the Red Storm posted 26 wins in 2019, Guerriero's first season as head coach. Under his guidance that season, the Red Storm earned the program's third BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year Award after securing the conference's regular season crown.
"I want to thank everyone at St. John's who over the years has helped me achieve my dream of being the head coach of the Red Storm softball program," said Guerriero. "It has meant the world to me to have been given the opportunity to have a positive impact on so many wonderful student athletes. In turn, they have had such an incredible impact on me. My family has been alongside me as well, and I have to thank my wife and daughters for their support."
"It has been an honor to coach in the BIG EAST Conference for nearly 23 years. The most rewarding part of those years was bringing the BIG EAST Championship home to Queens in 2015.
I believe the program is poised to continue rising in the BIG EAST again and there should be even more exciting times ahead."
Prior to being promoted to head coach before the 2018 season, Guerriero also served on staff as an assistant coach for six seasons. As an assistant, Guerriero helped garner BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors in both 2015 and 2017. The 2015 campaign was also highlighted with St. John's run to its first BIG EAST championship in program history and NCAA Tournament berth.
Since his arrival to Queens during the summer of 2012, Guerriero assisted in the development of 21 players who went on to earn All-BIG EAST distinction, including 11 student-athletes that collected all-conference recognition two or more times during their tenure. Guerriero also mentored six of the program's eight BIG EAST major award winners over his 11 seasons in Queens. As head coach, Guerriero mentored the 2019 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
Guerriero's coaching accomplishments also include single-season program records, such as team batting average (.317, 2015), wins (32, 2017) and home runs (62, 2018).
