Giorgia Walther Named to Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, St. John’s Selected Fourth in Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Red Storm picked to finish in the top five for the fifth straight year
QUEENS, N.Y. – Unanimous 2022 All-BIG EAST Team selection Giorgia Walther has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
This marks the first Preseason All-BIG EAST team selection for Walther and the 11th straight season the Johnnies have had at least one student-athlete tabbed to the preseason team. St. John's streak of preseason team selections dates back to the conference's reconfiguration in 2013.
Walther put forth a stellar season in 2022, helping the Johnnies to their 12th 20-win season in program history and an NIVC Tournament appearance. The Cannobio, Italy native led the Red Storm with 463 total kills and 3.67 kills per set, the third highest in the BIG EAST, while also contributing 4.15 points per frame. Walther also added 32 aces and 195 digs across the 2022 campaign.
In 2022, the sophomore earned nods to the All-BIG EAST Team as a unanimous selection and to the AVCA East Coast All-Region team as an honorable mention recipient.
The Red Storm were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, the team's fifth straight top-five selection. Marquette (97) was projected to finish first while defending BIG EAST Champion Creighton (94) and Xavier (78) placed just ahead of St. John's (64). UConn (63), DePaul (59), Villanova (46) and Butler (40) followed the Johnnies. Rounding out the bottom of the poll was Seton Hall (30), Providence (18) and Georgetown (16).
Along with Walther, the Johnnies return a talented group from the 2022 squad, including BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection Lucrezia Lodi and setter Wiktoria Kowalczyk, who led the Red Storm in assists with 1,299.
St. John's is set to open its 2023 season in Fort Myers, Fla., on Aug. 15 at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational, facing off against Ole Miss at 4 p.m.
