Jessica Garziano ties Jen Contesini for second place all-time in career assists with 24
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team kicked off the 2023 slate with a 3-0 clean sheet victory over FDU at Belson Stadium, marking the team's 12th straight win in a home opener.
Jordyn Levy, Athina Sofroniou and Lauryn Tran all tallied goals in the convincing victory.
Graduate student Jessica Garziano racked up a pair of helpers against the Knights (0-1), tying Jen Contesini for second place all-time with 24 career assists and chasing the program's assist leader, Jamie Clark (27).
Frederique St.-Jean and Mia Agresti also picked up points tonight, recording one assist each.
St. John's (1-0) was efficient on both sides of the ball, capitalizing on three of its six shots on net while surrendering just one shot the entire match.
The Red Storm struck first quickly, capitalizing on its first corner kick of the game in the fourth minute. With Garziano swinging in a deep ball from the left side of the net, the graduate midfielder found a leaping St.-Jean at the back post. The redshirt junior headed a pass toward the middle of the box, meeting the head of a streaking Levy for a 1-0 lead.
FDU nearly sent home an equalizer in the 16th minute, earning a penalty kick on a St. John's handball in the box. Goalkeeper Maria O'Sullivan read Lina Dirnberger correctly, diving to her right and punching away their lone shot of the evening to keep the Red Storm ahead by one. O'Sullivan picked up her first clean sheet with the Johnnies.
Levy and the Red Storm continued to pressure FDU over the final 29 minutes of the half, creating several chances and holding the Knights without a shot over that span.
Much like the first half, the Johnnies capitalized early in the second frame, this time on a right-footed strike from Sofroniou at the top of the box in the 52nd minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Just over seven minutes later, the Red Storm surged in the attacking third with consecutive passes from Agresti and Garziano to set up Tran for the team's third goal. While Garziano was originally credited with the goal on a putback attempt, the head official confirmed Tran's initial shot off the crossbar fell across the goal line for her first tally, giving Garziano and Agresti credit for assists.
The Johnnies stifled the Knights down the stretch and kept them away from the attacking third to take the home opener, 3-0.
St. John's will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 20, when the team heads to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy in a 1 p.m. tilt.
