St. John’s Heads to Navy for First Road Contest of the Year

The Red Storm started off the 2023 campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over FDU
QUEENS, N.Y. – After a resounding 3-0 victory in the season opener on Thursday night, the St. John's Women's Soccer team will hit the road for the first time during the 2023 campaign to face Navy on Sunday.
The match will begin at 1 p.m. from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md. The non-conference contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Red Storm got off on the right foot in the season opener orchestrating a commanding win over FDU, 3-0, in Queens.
Indiana transfer Jordyn Levy made an impressive debut putting a header into the back-of-the-net just four minutes into her St. John's career. Lauryn Tran and Athina Sofroniou stretched the advantage early in the second half and guide the Johnnies their 12th consecutive victory in home openers.
All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection Jessica Garziano wasted no time racking up points on Thursday. The midfielder dished out a pair of assists, which tied a all-time best and brought her to 24 for her career, tying Jenn Contesini for second all-time in program history. Thursday's impressive performance marked the fourth-straight multi-point season opener for the graduate student.
Additionally, Frederique St.- Jean and Mia Agresti tallied assists in a 10-point (three goals and four assists) evening for the home side.
The stifling Red Storm backline only allowed one shot over 90 minutes at Belson Stadium. The lone strike came on a penalty kick, that was stopped by goaltender Maria O'Sullivan in the 16th minute. The Fordham transfer registered a clean sheet in her first appearance with the Red & White.
Navy began their 2023 campaign with.a road victory, taking a 2-1 decision at Charleston Southern on Thursday night. Alexa Riddle put home the game-winner in the 66th minute on a one-time that pushed the Mids to 1-0-0 on the young season.
In 2022, Navy recorded an 8-8-3 record and finished 5th overall in the Patriot League under Head Coach Carin Gabarra, who just began his 32nd season at the helm. Prior this season, the Mids were slated to finish fifth in the Patriot League.
Sunday's matinee will mark the second time these two schools have ever met on the pitch with the first-ever coming last September in Queens. The Red Storm defeated Navy, 2-0, in a shutout effort aided by goals from Melina Couzis and a converted penalty from Michelle Money.
Sunday marks the first of three Patriot League opponents the Johnnies will during their non-conference slate. After the trip Annapolis, the Red Storm will face Colgate on the road on Aug. 27 at 1 p.m.
