ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The St. John's women's soccer team drew with Navy on a sunny Sunday afternoon, 0-0.
The Red Storm generated scoring chances firing off 13 shots at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility but were unable to convert and moved to 1-0-1 on the young season.
Maria O'Sullivan posted a clean sheet, her second in as many games, as the Fordham transfer tallied one save. Across the first two matches, the Johnnies' defensive unit has allowed just two shots on target in 180 minutes.
Jessica Garziano led all players with five shots on the afternoon. The Johnnies outshot their opponents, 13-8, in Annapolis.
St. John's had a sizeable advantage in corner kicks, 6-2, including five in the 45 minutes.
Despite several opportunities to score, neither team pulled in front in the first half. St. John's compiled five shots, with two on target and Navy recorded four shots, one on goal, that was easily corralled by O' Sullivan. The Red Storm's best opportunity came in the 29th minute as a high-arching ball from Frederique St.-Jean found a streaking Ava Collins but the senior was unable to tuck the volley past the keeper.
The second half opened with one of St. John's best chances to score in the game when Jessica Garziano had one of her five shots on the day sail over the bar on a breakaway opportunity in the 62nd minute.
The Red Storm continued to apply pressure in the attacking third as Jordyn Levy blew past a Navy defender right on the endline then placed a beautiful ball in front of the goal mouth but Nicole Gordon's strike went wide in the 67th minute. In the 82nd minute, Levy provided the Johnnies with another promising opportunity but her shot to the bottom left corner was parried away by Mids goaltender Mattie Gallagher, who logged four saves on the afternoon.
St. John's will be in action again when it travels to face its second straight Patriot League road opponent, Colgate on Aug. 27 at 1 p.m.
