QUEENS, N.Y. – After an undefeated opening week that saw St. John's compile a 1-0-1 record, the Red Storm women's soccer team will venture to Colgate on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest
The match will be held at Beyer-Small Field '76 Field in Hamilton, N.Y., and will be streamed on ESPN+. The game marks the second-straight road contest against a Patriot League opponent for the Johnnies.
After a resounding 3-0 victory to open the campaign against FDU on Aug. 17, the Red Storm played Navy to a scoreless draw, 0-0, three days later to start this year's action.
The St. John's backline was stellar during its opening two matches not allowing a single goal and conceding just two shots on target. A pair of Red Storm defenders, Athina Sofroniou and Frederique St.-Jean received recognition for their efforts.
St.-Jean was tabbed to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday. After missing the 2022 campaign due to injury, the redshirt junior recorded a triumphant return tallying an assist, allowing two shots on target and playing all 180 minutes against FDU and Navy.
Sofroniou became the first Red Storm player to win BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week in six years after the league office's announcement on Monday. The junior buried a strike into the left corner of the net to extend the St. John's lead in the 3-0 rout of FDU on Aug. 17.
In the season opener, three-time All-BIG EAST selection Jessica Garziano tacked on a pair of assists to tie for second all-time in career assists (24).
Colgate enters the match with an even 1-1-1 record on the season and lost its first match of the year on Thursday night against Buffalo, 1-0. In 2022, Colgate posted a 3-10-4 overall record, earning all three wins and two draws during Patriot League play. Prior to this season, the Raiders were slated to finish seventh in the Patriot League. Forward Ally Giovino returns after leading the squad with five goals and 10 points last year.
Sunday's matinee will mark the third time these two programs have ever met and the first in eight years. The all-time series between the two schools is split, 1-1. The two last met at a neutral site at Syracuse Stadium, where the Red Storm took home a 1-0 victory on Aug. 30, 2015.
After Sunday's tilt, the Johnnies will return to Queens for a Thursday night contest at Belson Stadium against Penn.
