St.-Jean, Gordon and Garziano record goals in convincing road victory
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team ran past Colgate on Sunday afternoon, 3-0, at Beyer-Small Field.
The Red Storm attack was firing on all cylinders recording three goals in a convincing road victory. Frederique St.-Jean, Nicole Gordon and Jessica Garziano each logged a goal in Hamilton, N.Y.
Lauryn Tran had a record day tallying a pair of dazzling assists against the Raiders. Athina Sofroniou and Emily Riggins each registered an assist on the first goal in the opening minutes of the match.
For the third-straight game, Maria O' Sullivan recorded a clean sheet in net for the Johnnies. The goaltender posted a season-high four saves.
In three games, the Johnnies have allowed zero goals and conceded just six shots on target. The Red Storm have tallied three-straight shutouts to open a season for the first time since 2016.
St. John's (2-0-1) got off to a hot start right off the bat. On a corner taken by Garziano, Riggins took the volley out of the air and found Sofroniou. The reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week popped a pass into the air that bounced off the head of a Colgate (1-2-1) defender and onto a waiting St.-Jean, who headed it into the bottom corner to give the Red Storm an early advantage, just 2:48 into the match. The early goal marked the second time in three matches the Johnnies recorded a tally in the opening five minutes.
St.-Jean continues her stellar start to the 2023 campaign. After tallying an assist in the opener and earning a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week, the redshirt junior continues her impressive form with her first goal since Oct. 31, 2021, against Providence.
In the 28th minute, Tran streaked down the left wing and diced a Raiders defender before playing a centering pass to Gordon, who fired a strike past Colgate's Alli Popham for her first tally of the season.
St. John's continued to control the pace of the game by creating one final attacking threat in the opening frame but the long-range shot from Sofroniou was corralled by Popham. The Red Storm went into the break leading, 2-0.
In the second half, it was Tran again down the sideline, once again weaving her way into the box and playing a well-timed centering pass that a streaking Garziano launched into the twine in the 52nd minute. Tran and Garizano are deadlocked for the team lead in points, each with four (1 G, 2 A's) on the young season.
In the 87th minute, the Raiders threatened but O' Sullivan steered away the long-range strike with a diving save to keep her 0.00 GAA intact.
After finishing up a two-game road swing, the Red Storm will be back in action on Thursday night against Penn at Belson Stadium.
