An early goal off a bouncing header from Frederique St.-Jean gave the Johnnies a lead less than three minutes into the match that it never relinquished. Nicole Gordon and Jessica Garziano registered their first goals of the 2023 season in an offensive flurry for the Red Storm.
Lauryn Tran paced the attack with a pair of highlight reel assists against the Raiders. The junior outside midfielder received her first-ever nod to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. The Calgary, Canada native native ranks second on the team with four points (1 G, 2 A's).
Additionally, Emily Riggins, Athina Sofroniou and Garziano logged an assist on Sunday at Beyer-Small Field.
A three-time All-BIG EAST selection, Garziano has gotten off to a strong start to the 2023 season tallying a team-high five points (1 G, 3 A's). After being credited with an assist on Sunday, the graduate student moved into sole position of second place on the all-time assists list. The midfielder currently has 25 and trails Jamie Clark by two for the program record.
Defensiviely, the Red Storm have been rock solid and are currently one of 11 teams in NCAA Division I to have not allowed a goal yet this season. The backline has only even conceded six shots on frame.
The three-straight clean sheets to open the year marks the first time the Johnnies have achieved that feat since the 2016 season.
Penn (2-0) enters the match after opening its season after a pair of 1-0 victories at home. The Quakers defeated Delaware and American at Penn Park last weekend.
In the Ivy League Preseason Poll, Penn was predicted to finish in eighth.
Thursday's contest will mark the first meeting between the two programs in 23 years The last and only other meeting between St. Johnís and Penn occurred on Nov. 12, 2000 in the ECAC Tournament. The Quakers won the nuetral site match, 1-0.
