The Red Storm will play a 12-game non-conference slate
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a stellar season that saw the St. John's women's basketball program win its first NCAA Tournament win in nine years, Head Coach Joe Tartamella announced the team's 12-game non-conference slate on Thursday.
The out-of-league schedule features 12 teams from nine different conferences and three games at the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico over Thanksgiving break.
St. John's women's basketball season tickets are now on sale. To reserve your spot, contact the St. John's Ticket Office at 1-888-GO-STORM or by visiting RedStormTix.com.
Last season, the Johnnies were one of nine NCAA Division I programs to go undefeated in non-conference regular season play, compiling a 9-0 record en route to the best start in program history, 13-0.
St. John's will begin its season on Nov. 6 against local foe LIU at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm will look to extend its seven-game winning streak, dating back to 2016.
On Nov. 11, the Johnnies will make their first road trip of the season, heading to defending CAA Champion Monmouth for a Friday contest at the OceanFirst Bank Center. In last year's season opener, the Red Storm dominated the Hawks, 78-39, and held its opponent to just 12 percent shooting from 3-point range.
For the first time in seven years, the Johnnies will welcome a Big Ten opponent to Queens when Penn State pays a visit on Nov. 16. The two schools last met on the hardwood at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida on Nov. 26, 2021. The Nittany Lions pulled out a narrow victory, 80-75.
Three days later, the Red Storm will host fellow New York City school Manhattan on Nov. 19. Despite only 13 miles between the two campuses, it will be the first meeting since 2010. St. John's leads the all-time series, 12-0.
After a two-game homestand, Coach Tartamella's squad will head to San Juan, P.R., for three games at the San Juan Shootout over Thanksgiving break from Nov. 23-25. The Red Storm will begin the competition on Turkey Day against VCU, the first meeting between the two schools in 27 years. On Friday, St. John's will meet UCF, a newly minted member of the Big 12 Conference, at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. In its final contest, the Johnnies will take on Jackson State, the reigning SWAC Regular Season Champions. The Tigers compiled a 21-10 record in 2022-23 and qualified for the WNIT.
Following the trip to Puerto Rico, the Red Storm will return home for a midweek tilt against Loyola Maryland on Nov. 29. The meeting will mark the first for St. John's against a Patriot League opponent since 2019.
Four days later, the Johnnies will be ready for an away match-up at Marist on Dec. 2. In its last five meetings against the Red Foxes, St. John's has held them to 50 points or fewer.
Another MAAC road opponent awaits on Dec. 7 when the group heads to Fairfield to take on the Stags at the newly built Leo D. Mahoney Arena. This will mark the 15th meeting between the two schools with the Red Storm leading the series, 12-2.
On Dec. 10, the Red & White will play host to Rhode Island for a meeting between two programs that finished inside the top-75 in the NET rankings a year ago. URI is fresh off its first-ever Atlantic 10 regular season title while bringing back the conference's most improved player and first team all-conference selection, Maye Toure.
In its final non-conference game, the Red Storm will go to New Haven, Conn., to face Yale on Dec. 21. In the last contest between the Johnnies and Bulldogs on Nov. 21, 2021, Unique Drake went for a career-high 24 points to pace the squad in its 86-68 victory.
Additional game times and broadcast information will be released at a later date.
With a new-look roster featuring eight new players, St. John's tallied three wins during a 10-day European Tour to Italy and Greece.
