St. John’s Finishes in Seventh at The Doc Gimmler

Ryan Rittberger posts a 5-under, 65, in Sunday’s final round
BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The St. John's men's golf team tallied a seventh place finish at its annual home event, The Doc Gimmler.
The Red Storm shot 1-over, 841, as a team through 54 holes at the Bethpage Red Course this weekend.
Columbia took the Doc Gimmler title out of the 15-team field with a cumulative score of 29-under par, boasting the top-three individual finishers.
In Sunday's final round, the teams battled through rainy conditions and an hour long rain delay. St. John's scored 1-over, 281, during the final 18 holes, which ranked third best in the third round.
Three Johnnies posted rounds of 4-under or lower on Long Island. Ryan Rittberger checked in with a team-low 5-under, 65, on Sunday. The graduate student shot the second lowest score of any player during the third round, tallying six birdies. The veteran finished a team-best 13th place at 2-under.
Peicheng Chen logged an 18th place finish after tallying an 1-under, 210. The junior birdied the 16th hole and recorded pars on 17 and 18 to. end the tournament under par.
Thomas Finn utilized an impressive second round 4-under, 66 to place in 30th. The freshman registered a 2-over, 72, on Sunday.
Individual competitor David Mlynek finished tied for fifth amongst individuals and inside the top-40 overall. The Czech Republic native shot 4-over, 214, in his St. John's debut.
"I see a lot of positives from our opening weekend," said Head Coach Phil Wildermuth. " Chen's 66 in the opening round, Thomas Finn's 66 in the second round yesterday and Ryan Rittberger with his 65 today. I look forward to getting back to work this week and preparing for our next tournament at Yale."
The Red Storm will be back in action in two weeks for the MacDonald Cup, hosted by Yale. Chen will look to defend his individual title in New Haven, Conn., on Sept. 23-24.
