Claire Cushing opened her 2023 campaign with an eighth-place finish
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The St. John's cross country team opened up its season finishing sixth at the Stony Brook Season Opener on Saturday morning. The Johnnies finished ahead of LIU and recorded one top-10 individual finish.
"This was our first real hard effort of the year," said Head Coach Elliott Blount. "We wanted to execute based on what we've seen in practice. We did execute in some respects, but we will need to improve in others. We'll look to build on this heading into next Saturday's meet."
2022 Team MVP, Claire Cushing led the way for the Red Storm, posting a personal-best 4K time of 14:23.70 and an eighth-place result. Gabriella Caronia grabbed 42nd with a time of 15:36.90. Right behind her was Hannah Huleatt finishing the 4K race in 15:39.00 for 45th.
Ezgi Yasar finished fourth on the team and 54th overall with a time of 15:58.80. After Yasar was Jenna D'Onofrio, who took 66th with a time of 16:59.60.
Rounding out the Johnnies was Cristina Stanescu. Stanescu started off her freshman campaign with a 4K time of 17:50.30, which was good for 69th place.
St. John's will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 9, when they travel to the LIU Fall Festival in Brookville, N.Y.
