Johnnies hold a 2-0-2 record against the Zips
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will look to rebound from its recent setback when No. 4 Akron visits Belson Stadium on Saturday in a 7 p.m. match.
Saturday's contest will be live streamed on BIG EAST Digital Network with Johnny Gadamowitz on the call. Live stats can also be found at RedStormSports.com.
The first 150 students at Belson Stadium will receive a St. John's soccer scarf, courtesy of RedZone, and a free Chick-fil-A sandwich.
The Johnnies battled Princeton on the road to a 3-2 setback on Tuesday, seeing goals from Macoumba Ba and Connor Mucchetti. Forward Max McNulty tied teammate Miguel Diaz for the team and BIG EAST lead with his fourth assist of the season.
Fellow attacker Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau paces the conference with five goals, matching Marquette's Brooklyn Merl and Georgetown's Jacob Murrell. With his five tallies that sit 21st in the nation, the Canadian forward is just the third player in the last decade to score five goals through the first eight games of the season, joining teammate Antek Sienkiel (2022) and Tani Oluwaseyi (Spring 2021).
The Red Storm will look for its first win against a ranked BIG EAST opponent at Belson Stadium since Sept. 20, 2019, when the team took down No. 19 Xavier, 3-1. The Johnnies will also look to dethrone a top 10 opponent for the first time since Oct. 28, 2017, when they downed No. 10 Georgetown, 1-0, at Belson.
The Red Storm and Zips will square off for the fifth time in program history with the Red Storm holding a 2-0-2 edge. With new overtime rules in effect, there will be no extra period despite three of the four previous meetings between both programs needing double overtime.
In its most recent matchup with the Zips, St. John's stunned then-No. 5/9 Akron with a 2-1 victory at Belson Stadium on Sept. 2, 2013, behind a Josh Godec equalizer in the 74th minute and the game-winning PK from Jimmy Mulligan in the 106th minute. A win on Saturday against the Zips will mark the highest-ranked regular season win since taking down No. 2 Duke, 4-0, on Sept. 11, 2005.
The BIG EAST's newest foe enters Saturday's tilt without a loss through eight games this season (5-0-3).
The Zips have been stout in all three zones of play, allowing just five goals while sitting seventh in the nation with a +11 goal differential. The squad's 0.63 goals against average (GAA) is also among the country's best, ranking 16th in Division I. The goalkeeper tandem of Mitch Budler and Seth Wilson have generated five clean sheets combined, helping to a 0.625 shutout percentage (7th in NCAA).
Offensively, Akron generates a Division I-leading 18.6 shots per game with 7.5 per contest being ripped on target, good for fourth. Jason Shokalook has been critical in the attacking third with a team-leading four goals, three assists and 11 points. The sophomore is ripping 3.7 shots per game (16th in NCAA), including 1.9 shots on goal per contest (12th).
