St. John’s Falters at Seton Hall, 1-0

Red Storm outshot the Pirates, 10-5
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's women's soccer team suffered a setback at Seton Hall, 1-0, on Thursday night at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Seton Hall scored just 4:51 into the match in South Orange and held off the Johnnies for the remainder of the game to capture a win in its conference home opener.
The Red Storm outshot the Pirates, 10-5, and held the advantage in shots on target, 4-2.
St. John's (5-4-2) earned far more corner kicks than the home side, 8-2.
Jailene DeJesus and Isabelle Aviza tied for the team-high each firing three shots apiece. Jessica Garziano and Frederique St.-Jean each tallied a pair of shots
The Pirates got on the board early in the fifth minute, when Natalie Tavana steered a strike into the goal off assists from Skyler Matusz and Phoebe Hampson.
As the first half progressed, the Johnnies began to go on the attack generating five shots in the opening 45 minutes. St. John's best chance came on a corner, Garziano played the ball in and as it bounced around the box St.-Jean got a foot on it in a scrum but it was picked up by Seton Hall's goalkeeper Anna Prawer.
In the latter half the rain began to fall and St. John's continued to push offensively. After receiving a pass from Garziano right outside the 18-yard-box, DeJesus unleashed a strike that went over the bar 62nd minute
The junior midfielder again with another look on net after Lauryn Tran fed a cross she fired on frame but the opportunity was halted by Prawer.
The Red Storm came close to an equalizer, as a Jordyn Levy cross to Nicole Gordon was played back across the box to a waiting Aviza, but the graduate student's shot went high with nine minutes remaining.
After bringing everyone forward on their eighth corner of the evening, Seton Hall took off on a breakaway before a standout defensive effort by Angelina Scoma erased the Pirates opportunity in the 85th minute.
The Pirates defense held out in the final five minutes to preserve a 1-0 victory at home.
The Johnnies will return home for a Sunday afternoon contest against Villanova at 1 p.m. The action from Belson Stadium will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports
