Red Storm will look to build on its three-game winning streak
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will start its four-game homestand on Saturday night, when it welcomes Lehigh to Belson Stadium.
The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Joey Jarzynka on the call from Queens.
The Red Storm are riding a three-game winning streak and hold a 4-0-1 record heading into Saturday's match. The squad will be seeking the program's best start since the 2013 season.
The Red Storm began to attract some attention as the squad entered the United Soccer Coaches' East Region poll at No. 9.
On Labor Day, the Johnnies picked up another victory, 2-1, at Central Connecticut State, courtesy of late-game heroics from Jordyn Levy. The junior veered her way into the box and fired a strike across the box that soared into the far upper corner of the net in 82nd minute.
The game-winning tally marked the second of the year for the Indiana transfer, who ranks tied for first in the BIG EAST in that category.
Jessica Garziano continues to pave the way offensively after recording another assist in Monday's win at CCSU Soccer Stadium. The veteran midfielder ranks 13th in the country in assists per game (0.8) and leads the Johnnies with eight points. The Melville, N.Y., native's latest helper marked her fourth on the year, she now sits just two shy of shattering Jamie Clark's record as the program's all-time assist leader.
Lauryn Tran has also emerged as an elite distributor for Head Coach Ian Stone. The speedy junior ranks second on the team in assists (3) and points (5).
The St. John's backline has been impressive and has only allowed one goal through five matches. The Red Storm ranked eighth in the country with a spectacular goals against average of .200. Maria O' Sullivan tallied four clean sheets to start the year, the graduate student keeper currently ranks ninth in the country in that category.
Lehigh is the third and final Patriot League opponent the Johnnies will play this season. The Mountain Hawks enter Saturday night's game with a 2-1-3 record on the year. Most recently, Lehigh defeated Penn, 1-0, a common opponent between the two squads. Aminah Baruwa and Faith Dobosiewicz led the team with two goals apiece on the year. Ava Schaller has logged an assist on three of the team's six goals.
Saturday's match will mark the fourth-ever meeting between the schools and the third in as many seasons. Lehigh leads the all-time series, 2-1. In last year's match, the Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 victory in Bethlehem, Pa. The last time the two faced off in Queens on Sept. 2, 2021, St. John's tallied a resounding 4-0 win. Current Johnnie Ava Collins tallied a goal in that contest at Belson.
The homestand will continue on Thursday Sept. 14, when St. John's will welcome Yale for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
