St. John’s Fends Off Late Run From Georgetown, Wins 57-56

The Red Storm move to 7-3 in BIG EAST play and 7-1 at Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team captured another narrow victory on Sunday afternoon against Georgetown, 57-56.
The Red Storm utilized a 25-point third quarter and fended off a Hoyas surge in the final frame to advance to 7-1 at Carnesecca Arena at this season.
St. John's improved to 7-3 in BIG EAST play for the second consecutive season. The Red Storm moved to 13-9 overall and have won 11 of its last 15 contests.
After tallying one of the most prolific scoring performances in program history against DePaul on Thursday, Unique Drake posted 18 points and shot 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Ber'Nyah Mayo finished in double-figures for the sixth-straight contest after tallying 11 points and a team-high four assists.
Jillian Archer was the third Johnnie to finish in double-digits recording 11 points, four boards, two steals and two blocks.
Tara Daye did it all at Carnesecca Arena, finishing the game with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting, 10 rebounds and a career-high three steals.
The 25-point third quarter is the most by St. John's since it scored 30 in the second frame in the season opener against LIU on Nov. 6. The Johnnies shot 9-for-16 (56.3 %) from the floor and 6-for-8 (75%) from the charity stripe during the third stanza.
The Hoyas Kelsey Ransom led all players with 19 points and seven assists on Sunday.
In the opening quarter, the Red Storm held the Hoyas scoreless for the first 5:02 of the game as the Red Storm built an early 5-0 edge. Mayo added the final bucket of the opening frame to make it 12-8 after 10 minutes.
The Red Storm continued to stretch its lead scoring first six points of the second frame. Archer capitalized on an easy finish on a slip pass from Mayo. It was the point guard again with a step-through move in the paint and got the floater to go to expand the advantage to double-digits, 18-8.
The Hoyas responded ripping off an 10-0 spurt to tie the game, 18-18. Drake responded with a lay-in off the glass as the two sides battled for the remainder of the half. Archer logged an old-fashioned 3-point play before Ransom's basket made it a one-point game, 23-22, headed into the break.
After the Hoyas' Alex Cowan's 3-pointer knotted the score at 25, The Johnnies offense started firing on all cylinders. Daye knocked the ball away and took off for a fastbreak lay-up with 4:26 left in the third. On the next possession, Drake drained a triple to bounce the lead to double-digits, 39-28. A pair of finishes in the paint for Jailah Donald and a close-to-the-basket finish for Archer capped off a 21-7 run to end the quarter and gave the Red Storm a 16-point cushion, 48-32, headed into the fourth.
In the final quarter, a triple from Drake stretched the Johnnies lead to its largest of the afternoon, 51-34. Georgetown responded once again with an 8-0 run to make it a single-digit contest with 5:16 to play. The Hoyas inched closer and closer, controlling play the final quarter and Ransom made it a two-point game, 55-53, with just eight seconds remaining. Drake made a pair of crucial free throws to bring the cushion back to a two-possession game with just four seconds on the clock. Ransom drained a triple with 0.5 left to play and a quick Red Storm inbound sealed the deal.
The Johnnies have now won eight of the last nine meetings with the Hoyas and five-straight against their conference foe.
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off against Xavier.
