1994 Cincinnati Reds’ draft picks Boone, St. John’s top draftee CJ Nitkowski and Red Storm Head Coach Mike Hampton conversed in front of sold-out, star-studded event in Long Island City
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team hosted its annual Bullpen Winter Banquet, a star-studded affair overlooking the New York City skyline at Vista Sky Lounge and Penthouse Ballroom in Long Island City on Friday.
The night featured many memorable moments, including a sit-down conversation with New York Yankees Manager Aaron Boone, St. John's highest draft pick and evening emcee CJ Nitkowski of Bally Sports Atlanta and Red Storm Head Coach Mike Hampton, all of whom were selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1994 MLB Draft. Among the sold-out contingent were some of the program's standouts, featuring former New York Mets closer John Franco, 2014 World Series Champion Joe Panik, newly inducted St. John's Hall of Famer Craig Hansen and the Red Storm's most recent MLB call-up, Joe La Sorsa.
Coach Hampton also addressed the crowd and gave a look into the team's projection for the upcoming 2024 campaign, which is slated to begin on Feb. 16 against 2023 NCAA Finalist Florida in Gainesville.
Former Red Storm student manager and director of baseball operations Derek Smith earned the coveted Jack Kaiser Advocate Award for his outstanding contributions and dedication to the St. John's baseball team.
The evening saw awards presented to the top players from last season as Joe Mascio took home the Howie Gershberg Award as the team's top pitcher and Aaron Mann secured the Peter P. Smith Award as the squad's most valuable offensive player.
The Red Storm had one of the most successful events in recent memory, raising $75,000 for the program. The Johnnies also have an on-going raffle for a suite at Yankee Stadium that features 20 guest tickets, two parking passes, food, beverages and a celebrity player appearance. Tickets can be purchased for $100 and the drawing is slated for Feb. 29.
