St. John’s Falls to RV Marquette, 3-1

Lucrezia Lodi logged her second double-double of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team fell to RV Marquette, 3-1, on Friday night inside Carnesecca Arena.
After taking the opening set, St. John's (13-6, 2-3 BIG EAST) fell in the final three frames. The scores of the sets were 25-14, 12-25, 18-25 and 20-25.
Lucrezia Lodi registered her second double-double of the season on 12 kills and 12 digs. The outside hitter also produced a service ace.
Erin Jones logged a career-high five aces against Marquette (8-6, 4-1 BIG EAST). The junior slammed 12 kills to go along with seven digs and five assists. Giorgia Walther tacked on nine kills.
Ludovica Zola hammered seven slams at a 60 percent hitting clip with three blocks.
Rashanny Solano Smith matched Lodi with 12 digs in the match paired with two helpers and an ace. The sophomore currently leads St. John's with 234 digs at 3.90 per set.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk paced the Johnnies with 35 assists and four blocks. Magda Stambrowska added another four rejections, five kills and two aces.
The opening set began with a 4-3 Marquette edge, but the Red Storm rained down five straight scores that featured three kills between Walther and Jones to lead, 8-4. Down 10-5, the Golden Eagles scored three consecutive points, until St. John's rallied for a 7-1 run on the back of four Jones aces to hold an eight-point advantage, 17-9. The Johnnies breezed through the rest of the opening stanza, taking it 25-14. Jones served up four aces in the first frame.
Both squads exchanged points to a 5-5 stalemate before Marquette registered back-to-back scores, going ahead, 7-5, and forcing the Red Storm's first timeout of the match. Marquette continued pouring on points with a 10-1 run, growing its advantage to 17-6. The Golden Eagles held firm the rest of the way, evening the match with a 25-12 set two victory. Zola rang up four kills in the second stanza.
Marquette took an initial 4-3 edge in the third game, but the Red Storm fired off a 5-0 spurt engineered by two Jones slams and two Stambrowska blocks, earning an 8-4 lead. The Golden Eagles went up 11-10, off a 7-2 scoring period, causing the Johnnies to call a timeout. Leading 15-12, Marquette put together a 5-2 spurt, growing its advantage to 20-14, which they carried to a 25-18 win in set three.
The Red Storm quickly led 4-0 in a back-and-forth fourth period off a kill and a block from Zola, forcing a Marquette timeout. Down 7-3, the Golden Eagles logged four straight points, knotting the match up at 7-7, and causing St. John's to talk things over. After trading sideouts to a 15-15 tie, Aubrey Hamilton slammed down two kills for Marquette, leading to the Red Storm's final timeout of the frame. The Golden Eagles held onto its two-point lead, 22-20, until they went on a decisive 3-0 spurt, winning the fourth set and the match, 25-20. The final frame featured nine ties and seven lead changes.
St. John's will return to Carnesecca Arena tomorrow to square off against No. 6 Creighton. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Queens.
