Jordyn Levy tucked home a rebound with 0:31 to play to earn a point on the road
VILLANOVA, Pa.– After trailing by two goals in the opening 20 minutes, Jordyn Levy finished the equalizer with just 0:31 to play as the St. John's women's soccer team rallied to draw Villanova on the road, 2-2.
Levy's late-game heroics gave the Red Storm a crucial point on the road at the Higgins Soccer Complex. The goal marked the senior's sixth of the season and second inside the final minute. The forward also logged an assist her first since the 2022 campaign for a season-high three points.
Jailene DeJesus continued her impressive form netting her team-high sixth goal of the season and tallied the helper on Levy's equalizer. The senior has all 15 of her points (6 goals, 3 assists) over the last eight games and has logged 10 points during BIG EAST play.
Nicole Multer also tallied a helper on DeJesus' goal in the 37th minute. The assist marked the defender's first in nearly two years since Oct. 23, 2022 against Marquette.
St. John's unleashed 25 shots at Higgins Soccer Complex, its second highest total this season only trailing its 37-shot outing against UAlbany on Sept. 5, which marked the most in at least two decades. The Johnnies put 13 strikes on frame as the BIG EAST saves' leader Hannah Dickinson tallied 11 stops for the Wildcats.
Emily Riggins launched seven strikes, which marked a career-high and matched a single-game high by a Johnnie this season. DeJesus registered six shots while freshman Nora Basile tied her season-high with five, including a near equalizer in the 90th minute.
The Red Storm had the first opportunity of the game as DeJesus directed a center pass from Lauryn Tran on frame just 1:10 into the match.
In the fifth minute as the Wildcats began to threaten, as a bouncing ball in the box was redirected on frame by Susanna Soderman off an assist from Morgan Kotch as Villanova jumped out to an early lead, 1-0.
Soderman struck once again off a set piece in the 20th minute sending a free kick from yards out into the center of the net with a right-footed strike to double the Wildcats' advantage, 2-0.
As St. John's looked to trim into the deficit the Red Storm dialed up its attacking prowess. In the 29th minute, Juliana Dane slipped a pass through leading an on-side DeJesus to a one-on-one with the Villanova goalkeeper Hannah Dickinson. The senior's crack was just saved by the outstretched arm of Dickinson and trickled just outside the goal frame.
As the Johnnies continued to press outshooting their opponents 8-6 in the opening 45 minutes, they finally shifted the momentum in the 37th minute. Multer gained possession in the attacking half and played a pass forward to Levy. The forward made a turn and slid a ball past the Villanova backline onto a streaking DeJesus, who buried a line drive into the bottom right corner of the net to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
In the second half, the Red Storm engineered chances as the squad tallied 17 of its 25 shot attempts in the latter 45 minutes.
Villanova looked to increase its cushion in the 63rd minute as Myla McLeod launched one towards the top center of the net that was tapped over the crossbar by Malene Nielsen. Nielsen played 45 minutes in the second half without allowing a goal and logged four saves.
As the Johnnies continued to crank up the pressure in search of the game-tying goal. Basile possessed a blocked shot off the foot of Riggins and took a touch towards net. The freshman steered a strike from a tough angle towards the net but it spiraled into the side of the twine in the 90th minute.
After the Red Storm intercepted the ensuing goal kick. DeJesus darted towards the goal as the clock dwindled firing a rocket off the crossbar. The shot bounced directly to the feet of Levy, who one-timed it into the net for the crucial game-tying tally with just 0:31 left on the clock.
The Red Storm will return to Queens for the first time in two weeks to face RV Xavier on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
