QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team fell on Thursday night to No. 20 Xavier, 3-0, at Belson Stadium.
Samantha Wiehe scored a brace and Samantha Erbach added a tally as the Musketeers move to 6-0-1 in BIG EAST play and 13-1-2 overall.
Malene Nielsen tallied a season-high 10 saves finishing just one shy of her career-high she set over three years ago against Wagner on Oct. 14, 2021 while playing at FDU. The double-digit stop performance was the highest by a St. John's goalkeeper since the 2023 BIG EAST Quarterfinal against Providence, when Maria O' Sullivan logged 10.
Lauryn Tran recorded two shots during Thursday night's setback at Belson.
In the 12th minute, Samantha Wiehe had the first opportunity to score for the blasting a strike off the crossbar that bounced off the back of Nielsen and nearly rolled into the net before Athina Sofroniou cleared the line.
St. John's (5-5-5, 0-4-3 BIG EAST) responded with Tran putting a strike on frame from outside the 18-yard box.
The Musketeers got on the board in the 19th minute after Samantha Wiehe had a give-and-go Emma Flick and proceeded to fire a strike that rung off the post and into the net, 1-0.
Just under six minutes later freshman phenom Samantha Erbach slipped a line drive near-post to double the Xavier lead, 2-0.
In the latter half, Xavier added to its lead with a converted penalty kick by Wiehe for her second goal of the evening to push the lead to 3-0.
Nielsen made several stops in the second half to keep the high-powered offense from advancing the lead any further. Over the final 40 minutes, the senior recorded nine of her 10 stops.
St. John's will be off on Sunday and will begin a two-match road swing when it battles Butler at the Bud Sellick Bowl on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
