Red Storm welcome nationally-ranked opponent on Thursday night
QUEENS, N.Y.– For the first time in two weeks, the St. John's women's soccer team will return home to Belson Stadium to face No. 20 Xavier on Thursday night at Belson Stadium at 7 p.m.
The BIG EAST contest will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Johnny Gadamowitz on the call from Queens.
Admission is free for all fans and come out to the "Night Before Tip-Off" for a festival on the Belson lawn as St. John's students catch tomorrow's action while gearing up for the annual Red Storm Tip-Off event that introduces the men's and women's basketball programs, headlined by Quavo.
The Johnnies had a flare for the dramatic once again in their last match on Sunday, as Jordyn Levy buried an equalizer with just 0:31 left to play to draw Villanova on the road, 2-2. The Red Storm trailed by two just 20 minutes into the match but clawed its way back to earn a crucial point on the road.
Levy and Jailene DeJesus each recorded a goal an assist for a team-high three points at the Higgins Soccer Complex. DeJesus got on the end of beautiful combination passing from Levy and Nicole Multer in the 37th minute. In the 90th minute, DeJesus launched a rocket off the crossbar and the rebound fell directly to Levy, who slammed it home for her sixth goal of the season.
DeJesus continues to be on a tear for St. John's (5-4-5, 0-3-3 BIG EAST) tallying all 15 of her points (six goals and three assists) over her last nine games. During BIG EAST play, the midfielder ranks tied for first in points (10), second in goals (4) and second in assists (2) over a six-match stretch. The Wyomissing, Pa., native was tabbed to the conference's weekly honor roll for the third time in the last five weeks.
Levy's sixth goal of the season ties her with DeJesus for the team-lead. The last minute equalizer marked the second time this season the forward has struck in the final moments after netting a game-winner with just :01 remaining against Saint Joseph's on Sept. 1. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in total goals.
The Johnnies peppered the Wildcats net on Sunday posting 25 shots, including 13 on frame, their conference high. Emily Rigginslaunched a career-high seven strikes while DeJesus tallied six and Nora Basile added five.
The Red Storm lead the all-time series, 7-4-1, dating back just over a decade. In the last four meetings Xavier holds a slight edge, 2-1-1. On Nov. 4, 2021, the Johnnies defeated their last nationally ranked opponent in the then-No. 11 Musketeers, 1-0, to advance to their first BIG EAST Tournament Championship game since 1994.
Xavier currently sits atop the BIG EAST standings with 16 points and a 5-0-1 league mark and a 12-1-2 overall record. The Musketeers have been an offensive juggernaut under first-year Head Coach Dean Ward ranking first in the BIG EAST by a sizeable margin in goals (42), assists (31), and points (115). The squad ranks sixth in NCAA Division I in scoring offense logging 2.8 goals per game.
The Musketeers have three players- Samantha Wiehe, Emma Flick and Samantha Erbach that have tallied 18 points or more and all three rank top-four in the BIG EAST in that category. Goaltender Maria Galley leads the league with seven shutouts and holds a goals against average of 0.64.
Following Thursday's match, St. John's will head to the Midwest for a two-game road swing against Butler (Oct. 24) and DePaul (Oct. 27).
