Donald and Mayo selected to lead the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team program has named Jailah Donald and Ber'Nyah Mayo as team captains for the 2024-25 season.
The two upperclassmen were selected by the coaching staff and players to lead the Johnnies after displaying an unwavering work-ethic and leadership skills.
Mayo made a major mark in her first year with the program after a successful three-year stint at UMass. The Wilmington, Del., native started 32 of 33 possible contests at the point guard position and helped guide St. John's to a third-place finish in the BIG EAST and a WBIT appearance.
During her senior campaign, Mayo became the first player since the program's all-time leading scorer Aliyyah Handford (2015-16) to record at least 300 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals in a single-season. She got better as the season went on finishing in double-figures in 20 games including 15 of the last 17 contests.
Mayo ranked top-10 in the BIG EAST in assists per game (10th at 3.5), steals per game (10th at 1.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (7th at 1.9).
Donald readies to take on the position of team captain as a junior after making a huge jump last year in 2023-24. The Inglewood, Calif., native increased her minutes average from 2.9 to 27.6 and ranked second on the team with 31 made triples at a 35.2 percent clip from beyond-the-arc.
A versatile defender Donald can guard four different positions on the floor and made 21 starts as a sophomore. Offensively, she amassed seven double-figure scoring efforts and shot 90 percent from the charity stripe.
The St. John's women's basketball program will kick-off its 2024-25 campaign on Nov. 4 against Saint Peter's at Carnesecca Arena. To purchase season tickets for the 50th anniversary season click here or call 1-800-GO-STORM.
