Red Storm will be back in action at DePaul on Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS – The St. John's women's soccer team fell on Thursday at Butler, 3-0, in Indianapolis.
Butler earned a home victory at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl behind goals from Leila Lister, Abigail Isger and Lea Larouche.
St. John's goalkeeper Malene Nielsen made 10 saves in 90 minutes of action marking her second-straight game with double-digit stops. The Juelsminde, Denmark native has finished one shy of her career-high in each of the last two conference contests logging 20 stops over that span.
Jailene DeJesus, Athina Sofroniou and Emily Riggins recorded shot attempts for the Red Storm during the setback in Indianapolis.
In the early going, Butler pressed offensively in the opening 20 minutes recording the first six shots of the match over that span. Nielsen made a quick-reaction save to a quick strike in the seventh minute batting it away.
After a Bulldogs shot attempt rang off the post and both teams swarmed the box after the rebound. After a blocked strike from the Bulldogs Sommer won possession and nudged it onto the feet of Leila Lister who slipped one into the net to take the lead in the 26thminute, 1-0.
Just 2:57 later, Isger capitalized off a turnover burying a strike to double the Bulldogs advantage at home, 2-0.
The Red Storm began to shift the possession into its attacking half in the second half. DeJesus directed one on frame that hit the side netting and Sofroniou knocked a header towards the goalline but was cleared away by Butler goaltender, Anna Pierce.
Nielsen made an impressive stop sprawling out to deflect a bouncing header out of bounds for a corner.
The senior goalkeeper continued to rack up save numbers as she halted a close-range shot. After Butler added its third tally on a strike from right at the 18-yard box into the upper-90 from Larouche, Nielsen made two more stops on the night to match her season-high.
The Red Storm will continue its Midwest road stint on Sunday when it heads to DePaul for 2 p.m. ET start from Wish Field in Chicago.
