Red Storm outshot the Blue Demons, 11-10
CHICAGO– The St. John's women's soccer team outshot DePaul, 11-10, on Sunday afternoon in Chicago but ultimately fell, 2-0.
The Red Storm held a slight edge in the shot category,, 11-10, including nine strikes in the second half but tallies by the Blue Demons' Lea Eisenring and Beth Smyth proved to be the difference at Wish Field.
Jailene DeJesus tied for the game-high with four shots on the afternoon, including three on target. Jordyn Levy recorded three shot attempts while Alyssa O' Brien added a pair during Sunday's setback.
Malene Nielsen made two stops on the afternoon in 90 minutes and is averaging 7.3 saves per game over her last three appearances.
There were no real chances in the first 15 minutes as the two sides got a feel for the match. The Blue Demons generated the first true chance grounding a drive by Lea Eisenring but Nielsen made the stop.
DeJesus nearly delivered a miraculous goal launching a strike from over 20 yards out that soared to the top of the net but almost dropping in but was poked over the bar by DePaul goalkeeper Elena Millam in the 25th minute.
The Blue Demons got on the board in the 39th minute off of a set piece from just outside the 18-yard box. Shayna Da Silva played the free kick in and it bounced towards the goal, where Eisenring got a foot on it and drove the strike into the bottom right corner to take a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm quickly looked to counter with a dangerous centering pass across the box. After it deflected off the foot of a DePaul player, Madison Mariani squared a shot up but the attempt drifted to the left of the goal. The Blue Demons went to the locker room with a 1-0 edge.
In the latter half, the Johnnies earned a free kick near the sideline. Fitzmaurice tried her luck with a high-arching delivery that flew directly towards the net before Millam hammer punched it away on the goal line to prevent the Red Storm equalizer.
In the 77th minute, St. John's garnered a corner kick and Mariani played a ball into the far post. O' Brien got the loose bouncing ball and steered a header before it was cleared away by the DePaul defense.
Lauryn Tran fired a strike that was blocked the backline and was reviewed for a potential handball but the call stood and no penalty kick was award in the 78th minute.
The Johnnies continued to apply offensive pressure as Levy fired one of the squad's nine second half shot attempts. DePaul countered as Smyth sealed the deal for the home side with a tally in the 82nd minute, 2-0.
The Red Storm will conclude its 2024 campaign on Halloween when it hosts Creighton at Belson Stadium at 7 p.m.
