Jailene DeJesus scores her fifth goal over the last six contests
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team fell on Thursday night at Belson Stadium to Marquette, 2-1, during its annual Pink Game.
Jailene DeJesus recorded a goal for the Red Storm tying for a team-best five on the year. Over her last six matches, the senior has logged five goals and two assists to move into the team lead with 12 points. The Wyomissing, Pa., native logged three shots, all on target.
Lauryn Tran provided the assist on DeJesus' goal with a centering pass in the 14th minute. Her helper marks the third of the year.
Malene Nielsen and Kayla Bower combined for seven saves on the night. Bower played the second half holding Marquette (4-7-2, 1-2 BIG EAST) scoreless for the final 45 minutes and matched a season-high with four stops.
Marquette's Emily Fix and Ella McAleenan provided the goals for the Golden Eagles. Haley Christianson recorded the assist on the game-opening tally.
DeJesus had the first opportunity of the match in the seventh minute as she received a centering pass from Tran and had a go firing one on frame that flew into the hands of Elise Krone.
In the 11th minute, the Golden Eagles as Haley Chrstianson played a cross back post Emily Fix who headed it home to take a 1-0 lead.
Just 3:22 later, the Red Storm knotted the match after a tally from DeJesus. Tran weaved her way into the box beating a Golden Eagles' defender and found DeJesus, who unleashed a left-footed line drive into the back-of-the-net to make it 1-1 in the 14th minute.
DeJesus had a strong look at goal shortly after in the 18th minute. The midfielder won possession on a beautiful through ball from Emily Riggins but couldn't get it past the goalkeeper.
In the 32nd minute, Adrianna Alberts sent a free kick from nearly half field into the 18-ard box. A Red Storm defender attempted a clearance but the header drifted behind her towards the goal and McAleenan won the race to it and bounced a header into the twine for the game-winner.
Marquette went into the halftime break with the 2-1 advantage and led in the shot category, 6-4.
In the second half, the visitors looked to expand their lead and had a flurry of chances off a corner kick in the 51st minute before Bower put a halt to the chances with a pair of saves.
St. John's (5-3-4, 0-2-2 BIG EAST) looked to threaten throughout the second half but were unable to generate any chances as Marquette held on for the victory in Queens.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to the nation's capital to face No. 20 Georgetown at 1 p.m.
