St. John’s Travels to Nation’s Capital to Face No. 20 Georgetown

Red Storm will face its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team will travel to face nationally-ranked No. 20 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The BIG EAST contest from Shaw Field is set to kick-off at 1 p.m. Monika Moore and Christian Taylor will hae the call from the nation's capital on FloSports.
The Red Storm enter the match with a 5-3-4 overall record and a 0-2-2 mark in BIG EAST play. On Thursday night, St. John's quickly equalized in response to an early Marquette goal but the Golden Eagles tallied the game-winner in the 32nd minute. The visitors held on for the remaining 68 minutes to earn a 2-1 victory at Belson Stadium.
Jailene DeJesus continued her excellent form on Thursday night netting the game-tying goal from 10 yards out in the 14th minute. The midfielder now leads the team with 12 points logging five goals and two assists over her last six appearances, marking a career-high. In conference play, she ranks third in the BIG EAST with seven points recording three goals and a helper through four matches. The Wyomissing, Pa., native additionally leads the squad in shot attempts (32) and shots on target (16).
Lauryn Tran provided the assist on DeJesus' goal against the Golden Eagles. The senior, who ranked top-10 in the BIG EAST in points in 2023 now has three helpers on the year tying her with Athina Sofroniou for the team lead.
Malene Nielsen and Kayla Bower continued to split time in between the pipes each playing 45 minutes over the last eight matches. Bower matched a career-high with four saves and played 45 shutout minutes in the latter half against Marquette. The junior holds a GAA of 0.92 while Nielsen paces the squad with 32 saves on the year.
Georgetown enters the contest on top of the BIG EAST standings with 10 points boasting a 3-0-1 record in league competition. On the year, the Hoyas hold a 7-1-4 mark and are unbeaten in their last seven matches dating back a month.
The Georgetown attack has produced 27 goals and 23 assists (77 points) this season, which ranks second in the BIG EAST. Two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Maja Lardner leads the Hoyas with six goals and four assists (16 points) on the year. Eliza Turner has tallied five goals this season.
In its most recent contest, the Hoyas battled Butler to a draw on Thursday night after stringing three wins together to begin league play.
The Johnnies will play the first of two conference road matches on Sunday. Following the match at Georgetown, the Red Storm will embark on a visit to Villanova on Oct. 13.
