Jailene DeJesus led the Red Storm with three shots
WASHINGTON D.C.– The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its contest at No. 20 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon, 3-0.
The Red Storm generated chances to equalize after the nationally-ranked Hoyas took a 1-0 advatnage in the 32nd minute. Georgetown extended its lead over the final 22 minutes to move to 8-1-4 on the year.
Cyanne Doyle, Maja Lardner and Eliza Turner recorded goals for the Hoyas in the nation's capitol.
Jailene DeJesus paced the Red Storm with three shots, including two on target. Lauryn Tran provided a pair of strikes while Juliana Dane, Hope Van Tuyle and Molly McGlame registered one shot apiece.
For the second-straight game, Kayla Bower matched her career-high with four saves at Shaw Field.
After a slow start and conservative first 20 minutes by both sides, DeJesus ripped the first strike of the match firing a line drive that was halted by Georgetown goalkeeper Cara Martin.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Hoyas' Claire Manning floated a ball into the box to Doyle, who popped a header into the back-of-the-net to give the home side a 1-0 advantage in the 32nd minute.
The Red Storm dialed up the attack and searched for the equalizer following the opening tally. Tran finished a through ball but the goal was called off due to offsides. In the 40th minute, Mia Agresti found an opening for a through-ball but Martin beat DeJesus to it at the top of the 18-yard box. The clear fell to Lauryn Tran as Martin sprinted back to her goal line but the ensuing shot attempt from the senior drifted wide right.
The Hoyas looked to double their lead just before the break but the Red Storm made an impressive defensive stand in the 42ndminute. Doyle fired a close-range strike from seven yards out that Bower got a hand on. The rebound fell to Caroline Spengler who had a clear look, but a bounding Athina Sofroniou deflected the strike at the goal line to keep it a 1-0 deficit going into halftime.
In the second half, the Johnnies squashed a few early chances from the Hoyas as Bower made some key plays in front of the net. In the 68th Maja Lardner doubled the Georgetown lead, 2-0.
The Red Storm responded immediately with its best chance of the afternoon as Madison Mariani slipped a pass through to DeJesus on the doorstep and she unleashed a strike that was batted down by Anna Karpenko in the 70th minute.
After the Hoyas' Eliza Turner added another off a set piece, Van Tuyle had an opportunity in the 82nd minute as she was first to a rebound and delivered a crack on goal but couldn't beat the keeper.
St. John's (5-4-4, 0-3-2 BIG EAST) will have a week off before it travels to Villanova on Oct. 13 for 1 p.m. contest.
