Red Storm to wrap up fall competition this weekend in Philadelphia
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct 31, 2024) – The St. John's men's tennis team will wrap up its fall schedule this weekend at the Dragon Invitational in Philadelphia.
The Johnnies will compete against athletes from NJIT, Temple and Delaware on Drexel's campus. The invitational will begin on Friday and run through Sunday.
The Johnnies are coming off a successful outing at the ITA Northeast Regionals last week in The City of Brotherly Love. St. John's won 13 total matches across four days of competition at the Hecht Tennis Center on UPenn's campus. Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raicevic reached the round of 16 as a duo in doubles play, as did Max Amling and Armando Sotelo.
In singles action, Amling advanced to the round of 32 while Ryota Kaneda picked up two victories in qualifying to claim a spot in the round of 64.
The Johnnies will return to the Dragon Invitational for the second year in a row. Last season at Drexel's fall competition, St. John's won 11 matches over two days, paced by Kaneda's three total wins. Then-freshman Armando Sotelo earned two triumphs in singles action while Gustavsson was victorious in a pair of contests.
Following this weekend's event, St. John's will start its dual match play in January.
