OMAHA, Neb. – The St. John's volleyball team fell to No. 6 Creighton in straight sets, 3-0, in Omaha, Neb., on Friday night inside D.J. Sokol Arena. The scores of the sets were 20-25, 18-25 and 18-25.
Rashanny Solano Smith was exceptional as St. John's (16-9, 5-6 BIG EAST) libero on Friday, registering 15 digs at five per set with an ace and an assist. Bree Martin shined, digging out five balls in three sets of work.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk paced the Red Storm in assists for the 24th match this season, collecting 20 helpers, four digs, two kills and two blocks against Creighton (20-2, 11-0 BIG EAST).
Erin Jones led the Johnnies in kills, registering eight slams paired with nine digs, two assists and an ace inside D.J. Sokol Arena.
Magda Stambrowska secured a team-high three blocks to go along with three kills. Lucrezia Lodi tacked on seven kills, six digs and a rejection to the Red Storm's totals.
After Creighton took an initial 3-1 edge, St. John's erupted for a 7-0 run that featured three kills between Giorgia Walther and Kowalczyk to lead 8-3 and force an early Bluejay timeout. Creighton erased its deficit with a 7-2 rally that evened the first set, 10-10, and forced a Red Storm timeout. Knotted at 13, the Bluejays put together a 4-0 stretch to take a 17-13 edge, which it carried to the end of the frame, taking the stanza, 25-20. Kowalczyk paced the set with eight assists.
Creighton built an initial 8-3 lead on the back of five kills, causing the Johnnies to burn their first timeout of the frame. The Bluejays continued to pile on points to a 14-5 advantage with a 6-2 rally, leading to the Johnnies' second timeout of the stanza. St. John's engineered an extended 13-7 run off a collection of kills and Bluejay errors, cutting its deficit down to three, 21-18. Creighton secured a final 4-0 spurt at the end of the second set, taking it, 25-18. Jones slammed down five kills in the second game.
