Third-Seeded St. John’s Drops to Second-Seeded Providence, 2-1, in Overtime

The Red Storm finished the 2024 season with a 9-6-5 record
BOYDS, Md. (Nov. 14, 2024) – The third-seeded St. John's men's soccer team fell to second-seeded Providence, 2-1, in an overtime heartbreaker at Maryland SoccerPlex on Thursday evening.
Junior Jackson Gould scored his second goal of the season in the second minute. Tyler Morck registered his second assist of the year with the primary helper while Justin Kopay recorded his first assist of the season on the tic-tac-toe goal.
Despite the loss, St. John's outshot the Friars, 14-10, including eight on frame to Providence's five. Thomas Lamaille led the Red Storm with four chances, seeing three on target in his 88 minutes of work.
It took just 90 seconds for the Red Storm to break through in Boyds. Kopay swung a pass from the right side into the box, finding Morck at the back post. The Johnnies' midfielder headed the ball to an open Gould from just outside the six-yard box. The Clifton Park, N.Y., native lunged at the pass and headed the first shot of the game into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm weathered three straight chances from Aidan Dovock, including a save by Alec McLachlan on a lasered attempt in the 13th minute. The Johnnies countered with Gould heading an attempt on target in the 18th minute. Lamaille also ripped a shot 70 seconds later but saw his opportunity blocked.
Providence knotted the game at one when Diego Batista fed Pearse O'Brien before putting his shot into the right side of the net from just outside the 18-yard box for a 1-1 deadlock.
The Johnnies continued to fire chance after chance towards the net in the final third of the opening frame. Lamaille put an attempt on target in the 31st minute after heading a shot on frame. Shortly after, Martin Kozak one-timed a low opportunity towards the net, seeing the Friars' keeper Lukas Burns reel in the shot.
Kopay nearly took the lead before the end of the half, streaking down the right side and lasering a chance towards the net. The Moon Township, Pa., native saw his attempt blocked with under a minute to play before heading into intermission tied at one.
The Red Storm surged the second stanza with another headed attempt from Lamaille on target after Augustine Boadi fired a cross into the box in the 46th minute. Nigel Griffith, who came off the bench to open the half, pickpocketed a Friars' defender and nearly put the Johnnies ahead with a right-footed rocket across his body towards the left post in the 51st minute.
Defender Antonio Biggs produced a quality chance in close, fielding a set piece from Julian Jakopovic in the box. The Kingston, Jamaica native one-touched the feed to himself and smacked a shot on net, but was stopped in front of the cage in the 54th minute.
The Johnnies held the Friars without a shot until the 60th minute when Luis Garcia fired a long shot from outside the box. McLachlan came off his line and stopped Providence in its track. The Red Storm's keeper turned away another attempt from Israel Nato entering the 69th minute, getting his hands on a high shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and away to keep the score deadlocked at one.
The two teams went back and forth until Lamaille headed his fourth shot on target from another Jakopovic set-piece cross in the 76th minute. St. John's Boadi and Kozak lined up back-to-back attempts from inside the box but saw both chances blocked by the Friars.
Providence took one last shot at the buzzer before heading to overtime. The Friars needed just 83 seconds in the extra period to knock home the game-winner as Neto scored on a one-timer to end the contest.
