NEW YORK – After a 2-0 week, Erin Jones earned her second-straight BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week nod, while Rashanny Solano Smith was tabbed to the conference's weekly honor roll, the league office announced on Monday.
Jones has now been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week three times this season, in addition to five weekly honor roll selections. Solano Smith followed up last week's conference defensive player of the week nod with the first weekly honor roll selection of her career.
Jones went on a tear last week, pushing St. John's to two critical road wins against Villanova (W, 3-1) and Butler (W, 3-1). The right-side hitter amassed 37 assists and 31 kills at 3.88 per set on a 30.2 hitting percentage with 29 digs, three blocks and an ace. With her seventh triple-double of conference play on Sunday, Jones tied the BIG EAST single-season record set by Seton Hall's Shelbey Manthorpe in 2013. The standout has now racked up eight triple-doubles in total this season and is one of five players in NCAA Division I to do so.
The junior leads St. John's with 481.5 points, 407 kills and 46 service aces this season. Nationally, she ranks 33rd in aces, 34th in points and 45th in kills.
Solano Smith continued her stellar sophomore season as the Johnnies' libero, registering 36 digs at 4.50 per set paired with six assists, an ace and the first kill of her season on a pinpoint accurate freeball.
When playing the Wildcats on Wednesday, the Limon, Costa Rica native earned 15 digs, four assists and an ace. On Sunday against the Bulldogs, she rang up a match-leading 21 digs paired with two helpers and a kill.
