QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team, along with the entire athletic department and university family, mourns the passing of Frank Franceschini.
The former Johnnie played two seasons (1958-59) in Queens under the late Hall of Famer and St. John's patriarch Jack Kaiser. Franceschini helped the team to a 17-6 record in 1959, a mark that ranked fourth in school history at the time.
Following his tenure in Queens, he went on to become a high school coach at Plainedge High School on Long Island for 16 years (1973-89). Franceschini amassed a record of 304-123-6 (.702) with nine North Shore Division 1 Baseball League titles, one Long Island Championship and one Nassau County crown. He also made one New York State Semifinal in his tenure with Plainedge.
Franceschini has been a loyal supporter of St. John's for over 60 years, earning the program's most distinct honor, the Jack Kaiser Advocate Award, at the team's annual gathering in 2012. The St. John's baseball program bestows this prestigious recognition upon a supporter who possesses identical characteristics as Coach Kaiser: loyalty, dedication, hard work and exceptional support to the team.
A wake will be held at Branch Funeral Home of Commack at 2115 Jericho Turnpike on Sunday, Nov. 24. Visitation times will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in Commack. A commemorative mass will take place at St. Thomas More RC Church in Hauppauge at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. Franceschini will be laid to rest following mass at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
