QUEENS, N.Y. – Coming off its fourth-straight victory with a 28-point triumph over DePaul, the St. John's men's basketball team (9-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) will make its first true road trip on Friday when it faces Providence (7-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) in a primetime matchup on FOX.
FOX Sports announcer Tim Brando and Donny Marshall are on the call for the national telecast. Tip-off from Amica Mutual Pavilion is slated for 8 p.m.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM radio channel 380 and via the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm rolled to an 89-61 victory over DePaul on Tuesday, which marked the program's 12th straight win inside Carnesecca Arena since the start of the 2023-24 campaign. Junior wing RJ Luis Jr. led five Johnnies in double figures with 19 points off the bench.
One of the nation's top 3-point shooting teams, DePaul was limited to just six 3-pointers after entering the game averaging 12.8 per contest. Offensively, St. John's scored 80 of its 89 points inside the 3-point arc, marking the first time the team recorded 89 points with no more than three triples since defeating No. 3 Duke, 93-78, on Jan. 30, 2011, at Madison Square Garden.
Over the four-game win streak, St. John's has outscored its opposition by a margin of 20.0 points per game, averaging 88.3 points while holding the opponent to 68.3 points per contest. During this stretch, four Johnnies are averaging double figures with Luis (17.8 ppg) and Zuby Ejiofor (17.5 ppg) leading the team in scoring. Kadary Richmond and Simeon Wilcher have also shined, posting 14.5 and 13.3 points per game, respectively.
The Red Storm and Friars split the regular season series last year with each team holding serve on their home court. St. John's earned a 75-73 victory over Providence on Jan. 10 as Joel Soriano and Daniss Jenkins registered 16 points apiece at Madison Square Garden. The Friars staved off a late push by the Johnnies to hold on for a 75-72 win at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Feb. 13. Overall, St. John's owns a 66-58 advantage in a series that dates back to 1927.
Providence enters Friday's matchup having split its last four games, including a 74-70 setback in its last contest against St. Bonaventure in the Hall of Fame Showcase on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena. Wesley Cardet Jr. and Jayden Pierre finished in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Pierre paces the team with 12.7 points and just over one steal per game in 12 starts this season. Bensley Joseph has also averaged double figures with 11.5 points to go with 3.3 assists and 3.2 boards per game.
Providence leads the BIG EAST in field goal percentage defense, holding the opposition to shoot just 39.3 percent from the floor. The Friars are allowing just 64.6 points per game, good for 36th in the nation.
After Friday's matchup with the Friars, St. John's returns to Carnesecca Arena on Dec. 28 to host Delaware for its last non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
