The Red Storm men’s basketball team will look for first win at CHI Health Center Omaha since 2019
QUEENS, N.Y. – Coming off its seventh consecutive win, the No. RV/24 St. John's men's basketball team (11-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) will close out 2024 with a road showdown against Creighton (8-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) on Tuesday.
The 30th all-time meeting between the Red Storm and Bluejays will be broadcast on Peacock TV. Tip-off from CHI Health Center Omaha is slated for 4 p.m. ET with John Fanta and Nick Bahe on the call
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brian Mahoney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM radio channel 382 and via the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm is coming off a 97-76 victory over Delaware on Saturday. Deivon Smith led six Johnnies in double figures with 20 points, a career-high 13 boards and eight assists. St. John's also shot 60.9 percent (39-64 FG) from the floor, its highest output since knocking down 61.4 percent of its shots in a 91-57 victory over Butler on Feb. 18, 2022.
The Red Storm will look to jump out to a seven-game winning streak for the first time since rattling off eight consecutive victories from Nov. 7 through Nov. 29, 2022. Outscoring the opposition by a margin of 17.2 points, St. John's has averaged 87.0 points while holding its opponents to 69.8 points per contest during its recent winning stretch.
With the win against the Blue Hens, the Johnnies improved to 9-2 in 11 non-conference games, averaging 85.5 points on a 48.6 percent shooting clip. The Red Storm also outscored its opponents by a margin of 16.7 points per game, including six wins by 20 points or more. Five players averaged in double figures against non-league opponents – RJ Luis Jr. (16.8 ppg), Zuby Ejiofor (14.5 ppg), Smith (10.5 ppg), Kadary Richmond (10.4 ppg) and Simeon Wilcher (10.0 ppg).
Entering Tuesday's contest, St. John's rides a seven-game winning streak in the regular season against BIG EAST opponents, dating back to its 90-85 win at Georgetown on Feb. 21. A win on Tuesday would mark the team's longest league winning streak since it captured wins in eight consecutive games from Feb. 1 to March 2, 1992.
St. John's has jumped out to a 2-0 mark in conference play after securing a 99-77 victory over DePaul on Dec. 17, followed by a crucial 72-70 road win over Providence on Dec. 20. The Johnnies will also look to open conference play with a 3-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season.*
The Red Storm will square off with Creighton for the 30th time in program history with the Bluejays holding a 18-11 advantage in the series. St. John's will also look to secure only its second win at Creighton, earning its lone victory on Jan. 30, 2019, with a 83-67 triumph. Shamorie Ponds rattled off 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting and four 3-pointers to go with eight boards, eight assists and six steals.
Creighton recently snapped a two-game skid with an 86-79 victory over Villanova on Dec. 21. Three players produced 20-point efforts in the seven-point victory as BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner led the way with 23 points. Steven Ashworth and Jamiya Neal chipped in 20 points apiece.
Kalkbrenner continues to be the Bluejays' stats leader, ranking third in the BIG EAST with 17.3 points per game and third in the nation with a 69.8 percent shooting percentage. The senior center has also pulled down 7.7 rebounds and produced 2.5 blocks per game (11th in NCAA).
Creighton leads the nation with an average of 10.8 fouls per contest. On the flip side, Ashworth holds NCAA Division I's top spot with a 98.0 percent efficiency (50-51 FT) from the charity stripe. The senior guard enters Tuesday's contest having knocked down 27 straight free throws and averaging 17.0 points per game.
The Red Storm will return to action in 2025 as it welcomes Butler for a Jan. 4 battle inside Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on FS1.
