St. John’s Falls 4-1 to Central Arkansas and 3-2 Against South Alabama

The Red Storm drop to Central Arkansas ahead of falling to South Alabama
CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2024) – St. John's (0-4) fell 4-1 to Central Arkansas (1-2) and 3-1 against South Alabama (3-0) on Saturday afternoon at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Sydney Totarsky went a combined 3-for-5 on the afternoon tallying a stolen base and run scored to lead St. John's on offense. Carolina Zamudio did not allow an earned run in four innings of relief against Central Arkansas as she racked up four strikeouts.
Game 1
In game one, Central Arkansas scored three of their four runs in the second inning as the early lead was too much for the Johnnies as the Bears captured the 4-1 victory.
After a scoreless first inning, Central Arkansas' Lilly Hood blooped a two-run single over first base to give the Bears an early 2-0 lead. Another run came across on a walk with the bases loaded as the Bears took a three-run advantage into the bottom half of the frame.
The score remained that way until the Bears tacked on one more in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-0. Zamudio pitched her way out of a bases-loaded jam, getting two outs to give the Red Storm a chance to come back.
Anese Thompson sparked the St. John's offense by drawing a walk in the home half. An out later, Amy Mallah punched a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Melanie Santos pulled an RBI single into left field to score Thompson and put the Red Storm on the board 4-1. With runners on second and third, Central Arkansas' Bailee Runner found her way out of the jam, preventing a St. John's comeback.
Zamudio cruised through the next three innings holding the Central Arkansas lead to three. The Johnnies had opportunities late as two runners were left stranded in each of the last three innings, but the Red Storm wound up falling 4-1.
Game 2
The Red Storm dropped the second game to South Alabama, 3-2, after a walk-off hit sealed the victory for the Jaguars.
Hannah Mearns tossed 6.1 innings striking out three in her second start of the young season.
The Johnnies jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the opening frame as the first three batters reached base capped by Thompson's RBI bloop single to left, driving in Jess Bianco.
Mearns sat the Jaguars down 1-2-3 to start the game, striking out two in the home half of the first.
In the second inning, Totarsky singled to centerfield and promptly stole second before Cassidy Stouffer doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Totarsky came around to score on a wild pitch as the Johnnies lead grew to 2-0.
South Alabama's offense battled back in the top half as the first two batters reached to put runners on the corners with no outs. Mallah made a great defensive stop on a hard ground to third and threw from one knee to cut down the runner at home. A Jaguar run crossed the plate on a double-play attempt by the Red Storm, but Mearns settled in stranding two runners to keep the score in favor of St. John's 2-1.
After a scoreless third, the St. John's offense threatened to score in the top half of the fourth as Totarsky recorded her second hit of the game followed by Elanna Lysiak driving a double into center field. With Johnnies on second and third and one out, South Alabama's Ryley Harrison battled back to get the next two batters leaving the score at 2-1.
Mearns continued to navigate her way through the Jaguars offense in the home half. With runners on the corners and one out, Mearns forced the next two batters to fly out preserving the one-run advantage.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Jaguars' Odalys Cordova doubled down the left field line and eventually tagged up on a foul pop-up to knot the game at two apiece.
St. John's went down in order to in the top half of the final frame before South Alabama's Sasha Willem's hit a walk-off single to win the game 3-2.
The Red Storm will wrap up play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against the NC State Wolfpack.
