The Red Storm drop final game in Florida to the Wolfpack
CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2024) – The St. John's softball team fell to NC State, 9-1, in its final game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday morning.
London Jarrard reached the 100 career hit mark in the first inning after sending a triple to the center field wall in the first inning of the game. Jarrard becomes the _____ player in program history to tally 100-plus hits.
Aneese Thompson recorded the lone RBI for the Red Storm to plate Jarrard in the first inning.
Jess Bianco and Cassidy Stouffer joined Jarrard in recording hits during Sunday's setback in Clearwater.
The Wolfpack jumped out to the early lead after Taylor Ensley hit a three-run home run to left center putting NC State up 3-0.
St. John's fired back in the bottom of the first as Jarrard launched a triple to the wall in center. Thompson tallied her third RBI of the tournament driving in Jarrard on a sharp groundout to shortstop to trim the NC State lead, 3-1.
After a scoreless second, Ensley singled to right to bring home her fourth RBI of the game increasing the Wolfpack lead to 4-1 midway through the third.
Bianco tried sparking the Red Storm offense, laying down a perfect bunt single to lead off the third, but NC State's Madison Inscoe fought back tallying two strikeouts to get out of the inning and mantain the three-run advantage.
St. John's Loreley Francia and NC State's Inscoe pitched a clean fourth inning to leave the score at 4-1 NC State into the fifth.
NC State expanded its lead by plating three in the top half of the fifth making the score, 7-1.
The score remained that way till the top of the seventh as NC State added two more sealing the 9-1 victory.
St. John's will take the field again on Friday when they start play at the Charleston Southern Blue and Gold Classic against UMass Lowell and host school Charleston Southern. The first pitch against UMass Lowell is slated for 12:30 p.m.
