Unique Drake goes for 26 points in winning effort
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team dominated the fourth quarter going on an 11-0 run in the finale frame to down Seton Hall, 68-57.
Unique Drake had another strong scoring performance leading all scorers with 26 points. The redshirt senior shot 9-for-17 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Jillian Archer recorded her eighth double-double of the season and second-straight after tallying 10 points and 12 boards. The forward also chipped in a season-high three steals.
For the ninth time in the last 10 games, Ber'Nyah Mayo finished in double-figures adding 13 points. The Wilmington, Del., native matched her season-high with four steals.
The Red Storm controlled the glass outrebounding Seton Hall, 36-25. Phoenix Gedeon and Mayo each tallied five boards apiece.
The Johnnies were strong from the free throw line shooting 17-for-20 from the charity stripe, including cashing in on the final 15.
St. John's (15-11, 9-5 BIG EAST) has now won eight consecutive games at Carnesecca Arena, six of them by double-digits and move to 9-1 at its on-campus venue.
Jailah Donald sunk the games first basket from long-range to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Daye intercepted a pass and took off to the opposite end of the floor in the early going. The Red Storm continued to score in bunches in the opening stanza and Drake's mid-range jumper gave it an eight-point advantage, 20-12, at the end of the first.
Mayo went on a tear in the second quarter taking a steal the other for the bucket and the foul. An off-balance finish inside gave the Red Storm a nine-point cushion, 28-19. The Pirates rattled off a 16-4 run to take their first lead of the evening before Drake rose up for a mid-range to halt the run and force a one-point game, 35-34. Seton Hall added one more basket to take a three-point edge, 37-34.
After the visitors took their largest lead of the game, 39-34, to start off the second half. The Red Storm exploded on an 11-0 run over 1:54 that was capped off by a second chance lay-in from Donald to take a six-point edge.
During the final quarter, Seton Hall twice cut the deficit to a single point before the Johnnies took control and engineered their second 11-0 scoring run of the second half. Archer recorded a steal and then finished on the other end as part of dominant stretch. The Pirates hit a pair of triples over the final few minutes but never neared closer than eight points as Drake capped off another impeccable scoring performance. Archer tallied the final bucket of the evening on a wide-open lay-in to solidify her double-double and clinch a double-digit victory for the Red Storm.
Following Tuesday's win the Red Storm snap a four-game losing streak against the Pirates and have now defeated every BIG EAST school over the last two seasons.
The Red Storm will be back at home for its "Pink Game" against No. 20/19 Creighton on Friday night at 7 p.m.
